PSG PLAN BARCA RAID

MUSA: LEICESTER PROMISED ME STARTING SPOT
Ahmed Musa has been speaking after leaving Leicester City this summer, saying he had been promised a starting spot at the King Power Stadium this season only to have a bid accepted for him during the World Cup. Leadership.ng quotes him as saying: ”I wanted to stay in England because that has been my dream for years but what will you do when you’re told a bid has been accepted for you? I had to move to where I know I will be celebrated. “Talks have been on about how I moved for the money but nobody has considered the fact that Leicester City also sold me for the money. Transfers can only happen if both parties agree to it and that was my case." 07:20
POGBA APOLOGY FOR BRIGHTON LOSS
Paul Pogba, who has been a target for Barcelona this summer, has apologised for his role in Manchester United's 3-2 defeat at Brighton yesterday. The captain for the day has reportedly been at loggerheads with boss Jose Mourinho, but told Sky Sports: "We lost, we did not deserve to win. The attitude we had was not like we wanted to beat them, they had more hunger than us. "I put myself first, my attitude wasn't right enough, we keep trying and pushing, and it is going to be a big lesson for us." 06:43
MORE ON MILLER'S DEPARTURE
Livingston have released a statement over the departure of Kenny Miller... "Livingston have been in discussions over the weekend with Kenny Millerand his representatives. "The club felt that the player-manager role Miller has been working with hasn't been working and had requested he reverted to a full-time manager’s role. But we understand Miller feels he isn’t ready to give up his football career at this time. "As a result the club and Kenny have amicably agreed to part company." 06:40

Player-manager Kenny Miller has parted company with Livingston, the club has announced. 06:37
ELSEWHERE...
Roberto Firmino is quoted by The Mirror rejecting speculation connecting him with Barcelona, and that he is happy "in the present" at Liverpool. He said: "When people ask what my ambitions are for the rest of my career, I always say that I live in the present. “I don’t look at more than what we have in front of us in the next few days. “I’m only interested in Liverpool and winning everything I can with them. We have the best supporters in the world here, they are amazing – and there are Liverpool fans in every part of the planet. “So we know what it would mean to be champions.” 06:15
TODAY'S TOP STORY...

SILVA JOINS SEVILLA

SILVA: RICHARLISON WAS 'MARKET PRICE'
Everton manager Marco Silva again moved to defend the price the Toffees paid for Richarlison - and he may have had a point after the Brazilian's opening-day double. He said: "If one club like us pays the money it is because that is his value in the market - and it’s not only our club paying this money for one player." 19:06
RODGERS CALM OVER SQUAD
Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers says he is relaxed over the strength of his squad, despite their loss against Hearts today. 18:21
BRUCE HAILS 'CLASS' GREALISH
Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce has paid tribute to Jack Grealish's attitude after his proposed move to Tottenham fell through this week and he starred in the 3-2 win over Wigan. "Considering the way he has conducted himself over the last few days he has been a breath of fresh air. I thought the way he played highlights the reason why the Premier League want to buy him. He oozes that little bit of class which was evident against Wigan." 17:40
GUNN BACKS HART MOVE
Southampton’s Angus Gunn believes Joe Hart is ready to revive his career at Burnley after moving from Manchester City. “Burnley is a good move for him. The British environment will suit him. He will definitely perform well and we might see him in goal here on Sunday." 16:32
RODGERS DENIES QUIT TALK
Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers denies rumours he is ready to walk away from the club because of transfer disagreements. "I love my life here. Despite all reports, there's talk of ultimatums with the board, I don't work that way, my communication is very open, so that's certainly not the case." 16:03
RODGERS: BOYATA FUTURE UNCLEAR
Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is uncertain as to whether he can play Dedryck Boyata amid questipons around the future of the Belgium defender. The Parkhead club rejected a £9million bid from Fulham for the 27-year-old stopper, in the last year of his contract, before the English deadline passed. Rodgers said: “We will see over the next couple of days. There are a couple of issues medically with him as well and of course at this stage it is difficult for players, I respect that. But he is not disruptive.” 15:01
LAFFERTY RANGERS LINK CONTINUES
Kyle Lafferty scored the winner for Hearts against Celtic today, but told Sky Sports afterwards that he couldn't rule out a move to Rangers. However, he said he was focused on Hearts for the time being. Hearts boss Craig Levein also admitted he doesn’t know if he will be able to keep the player. 14:55
LENNION HAILS HORGAN DEAL
Hibernian head coach Neil Lennon feels he has pulled off a coup by completing the signing of Irish winger Daryl Horgan from Preston. Lennon said: “We are very pleased to welcome Daryl to the club. He’s one we’ve been keen on for a long time and it’s a real coup to get him over the line. “Daryl will give us a real threat going forward and some strength out wide – we had been looking to add in that area and I’m delighted with the options we now have. He has power and pace and will hopefully give us another dimension to our play in the final third.” 13:50
EDMILSON IN FORENTINA MEDICAL
West Ham midfielder Edimilson Fernandes will have a medical on Sunday ahead of a move to Fiorentina, according to Sky in Italy. Switzerland international Fernandes is set join the Serie A club on a season-long loan with an option to buy. Fernandes has made 48 appearances for West Ham since joining from FC Sion in the summer of 2016. 13:42
Earlier today, Newcastle fans gathered in their hundreds outside one of owner Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct city centre stores in protest at his stewardship of the club. 12:06
N'ZONZI WANTS ROMA MOVE
Steven N'Zonzi has told Sevilla that he wants to join Roma, according to Gazzetta dello Sport. The Serie A club are interested in the French midfielder, but have yet to make a meaningful offer for him. 11:11
'ALISSON HAS FIT IN WELL'
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has every faith new goalkeeper Alisson Becker will make a seamless transition into the Premier League. "Just be a goalkeeper. Be yourself, in this case, because he is very calm and laid back - and that helps," the Liverpool boss said. "It's about making the right decisions in the right moments. It's all good. He's settled really quick, as if he's been here longer than two weeks. That's all fine." 10:42
HOLT JOINS NORWICH AS COACH
Grant Holt has joined Norwich City’s academy coaching set-up on a part-time basis. Holt, who scored 78 goals in 168 games for the Canaries, is working on his coaching qualifications. 10:22
MODRIC 'WANTS STAY'
Luka Modric has decided to stay at Real Madrid amid strong interest from Inter Milan, according to AS. The Croatian will sign a new contract with the European champions shortly, with the midfielder set to earn as much as Sergio Ramos. 09:56
BARCA DROP POGBA INTEREST
Barcelona have dropped their interest in Paul Pogba, accepting that the Frenchman will not leave Manchester United in this transfer window, according to RMC. However, the Catalans could launch a Philippe Coutinho-style charm offensive to eventually get their man in a future window. 09:20
HIBS SIGN HORGAN
Hibernian have signed Republic of Ireland international Daryl Horgan from Preston North End for an undisclosed fee. The 25-year-old winger has agreed a three-year contract with the Edinburgh club and could make his debut in Sunday's Scottish Premiership game at St Johnstone. 08:54

NEVILLE: BOARD-JOSE DISCONNECT?
Gary Neville believes there is a "disconnect" between Jose Mourinho and the Manchester United board after a tumultuous summer transfer window. "There seems to be a disconnect between the board and who Jose thinks should come to the club," he said on Friday Night Football. "It's intriguing because Jose's talking about the lack of influence managers have over signings and sporting directors, heads of recruitment having a bigger say. I actually think that's the way football should go and that coaches should concentrate on football. "But who are the people in the boardroom telling him that his signings aren't right? United haven't got a sporting director. Sir Alex Ferguson and Bobby Charlton aren't being consulted." Read more from Neville HERE 06:52
RAFA: WE CAN'T CHANGE WHAT HAPPENED
Rafael Benitez has told Sky Sports he wanted to make more improvements at Newcastle this summer, but is now focused on their Premier League opener against Tottenham. Newcastle made seven signings during the transfer window - but made a net profit of more than £25m, despite finishing 10th in the Premier League last season. Hear his thoughts in the video below... 06:29
JOSE: HEAD COACH, NOT MANAGER?
Jose Mourinho said he should probably be called a "head coach" rather than a "manager" after Manchester United beat Leicester City 2-1 without the playing personnel he expected. Mourinho gave United's hierarchy a list of players he wanted to sign before the window closed on Thursday, but the deadline passed without any further additions. "Football is changing. Probably football managers should be called more head coaches. We have big multi-functional coaching staffs and I think we are more the head coach than the manager." 06:12
OVERNIGHT NEWS
Sky sources: Chelsea are close to agreeing deal for Tiemoue Bakayoko to join AC Milan on season-long loan. The midfielder signed for £40m from Monaco last summer. 06:08

JaguarGator9's Weird Stat Thread- Bowl Edition (Part I)
I did a Weird Stat Thread a couple of weeks ago for Conference Championship Weekend, which you can find here. I said that if the reception was good for that, then I would do a Weird Stat Thread for the bowls. And, the reception was really good, so I’m back for the bowl games. I’m not going to do all the bowl games at once (because if I did, I’d reach the text box word limit, and because it would be information overload). What I’ll do is break it up by day. The schedule will look something like this:
12/19: All the bowls played on 12/19 (excluding the Celebration Bowl, because that is not a true bowl game)
12/21: All the bowls played between 12/21 and 12/24
12/25 or 12/26: All the bowls played on 12/26
12/28: All bowl games played between 12/28 and 12/30
12/30: Bowls in the Playoff
12/31: The other NY6 games, alongside the bowls played on January 1
1/1: All bowl games played on January 2
That’s the schedule of what you can expect from the Weird Stat Thread, alongside the weekly postings in the NFL subreddit for everything NFL related (which will be up later tonight). So, with that being said, let’s take a look at every weird stat that has absolutely nothing to do with the action on the field. Gildan New Mexico Bowl
This is the first time ever that the New Mexico Bowl is being played between two teams that have already won the New Mexico Bowl. Arizona won in 2012, while New Mexico won in 2007. Oddly enough, both of those games were wins over Nevada. Nevada is 0-2 in the New Mexico Bowl.
The last 8 times that New Mexico defeated Arizona, the #1 selling single of the previous year was not done by an American male solo artist

Remember that Daniel Powter is Canadian. The #1 selling single of 2014 was “Happy” by Pharrell Williams, so a New Mexico win can break that streak of nearly 50 years.
The last time any team only recorded a 1-game winning streak in the series was back in 1933. Since 1933, the results have looked like this: Arizona won 4 in a row, followed by New Mexico winning 3 in a row, then Arizona winning 12 in a row (alongside 1 tie), then New Mexico winning 3 in a row, then Arizona winning 2 in a row, then New Mexico winning 4 in a row, then Arizona winning 4 in a row, then New Mexico winning 2 in a row, then Arizona winning 3 in a row, then New Mexico winning 2 in a row, then Arizona winning 4 in a row, then New Mexico winning 2 in a row. When a team is on a roll in this series, they’re on a roll.
Since Elton John began his singing career, New Mexico has defeated Arizona six times. All six times, Elton John released an album the year before

I bring this up because Elton John did not release an album in 2014, so this is not a good sign for New Mexico when combined with the previous thing about American solo artists in the Arizona/New Mexico rivalry
Not that it applies for this game, since both Iowa and Tennessee were unranked last season, but the Mountain West is undefeated in the New Mexico Bowl when the lower ranked team won the Gator Bowl from the previous year

Again, it doesn’t really apply here, but it’s a weird stat nonetheless, which is the point.
The Mountain West representative has lost the New Mexico Bowl three times. All three times, the artist from the previous Super Bowl halftime show performed a song starting with the letter ‘S’

I’m sorry for putting back Fergie’s awful rendition of “Sweet Child O’Mine” into your brains, but it’s relevant for this stat. Katy Perry’s halftime show from last year featured no song that started with that letter, so that’s a good sign for New Mexico here.
The Mountain West representative has lost the New Mexico Bowl three times. All three times, Valencia finished the previous La Liga season in exactly third place

Oddly enough, Valencia has only finished in third place 4 times since the turn of the century, so it’s not like this is a common occurrence. However (good news for New Mexico here), Valencia did not finish in third place last season; it was Atletico Madrid.
To close this bowl game off, this is another promising sign for New Mexico. The Mountain West representative has lost the New Mexico Bowl three times. All three times, the National League representative won the previous World Series

Utah is currently on a four game winning streak against BYU right now. This is their third 4-game winning streak since the creation of the Super Bowl; however, since the creation of the Super Bowl, they have never been able to get to five.
BYU has played in the Las Vegas Bowl five times before this, winning 3 and losing 2. When the previous #1 selling album of the year is multiple words, they are undefeated. When the previous #1 selling album of the year is one word, they are winless.

This is the eleventh Las Vegas Bowl played since 2005. More than half of them have featured BYU.

Shakira did not release a single in 2015. You know what Shakira said in 2006- the stats don’t lie… or something like that. I don’t think a song about stats would’ve made it to #1 on the charts.
Both times that BYU lost the Las Vegas Bowl, the Bundesliga winner from the previous season was Bayern Munich. It happened in 2005 and 2008. Bayern Munich won the last Bundesliga title
Both times that BYU lost the Las Vegas Bowl, the EuroVision winner was a first-time winner. Greece won for the first time in 2005, and Russia won for the first time in 2008. Fortunately for BYU, the last EuroVision winner was Sweden, who has won the tournament six times.
Both times that BYU lost the Las Vegas Bowl, the UEFA Champions League winner was from England. It happened in 2005 (Liverpool winning) and in 2008 (Manchester United winning). Again, fortunately for BYU, the last champion was FC Barcelona.
Both times that BYU lost the Las Vegas Bowl, the previous Super Bowl halftime show had exactly four songs. In 2005, Paul McCartney played “Drive My Car,” “Get Back,” “Live and Let Die,” and “Hey Jude.” In 2008, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers played “American Girl,” “I Won’t Back Down,” “Free Fallin’,” and “Runnin’ Down a Dream.” Katy Perry, Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott played way more than four songs during the last halftime show, so once again, BYU is safe here. However, considering the fact that this is a Holy War matchup, and because Utah has had BYU’s number in recent years, don’t rely on the weird stats to do all of BYU’s “dirty work.”
Raycom Media Camellia Bowl This one is hard to find weird stats on, because this is only the second Camellia Bowl, it’s the first meeting between Ohio and Appalachian State, and it’s the first bowl appearance for the Mountaineers. Here’s what I could get, though, from Ohio’s perspective:
This is the ninth bowl appearance for Ohio. They have never appeared in the same bowl game twice, and every bowl game that Ohio has played in has been against an opponent located south of them
Both times that Ohio won a bowl game, the losing coach of the final game of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament had a first name starting with the letter ‘B’ and a last name starting with the letter ‘S.’ In 2011, Brad Stevens lost the final match, and in 2012, Bill Self lost the final match. Last year, Bo Ryan lost in the finals, but the stat still works if you just change it to first names starting with the letter ‘B.’
Both times that Ohio won a bowl game, an NFC team defeated an AFC team in the Super Bowl by one possession in a domed venue (Green Bay over Pittsburgh in 2011, NY Giants over New England in 2012). This one would’ve held true… if it wasn’t for a pass.
This is the second straight bowl that Ohio is playing against a North Carolina team
Amazingly enough, the success of the Ohio Bobcats in football may come down to Rihanna. In every year since Rihanna was born, Ohio has made a bowl game when she releases a top 10 single in the USA

And lastly, Ohio’s “greatness” comes at the expense of Floridian NFL teams. Ohio has made 9 bowl games. All 9 times, a Floridian team has failed to win a playoff game the season beforehand

Note that the Dolphins made the playoffs in 2008, but didn’t win a game. Crazy how one state can be so bad at professional football. If you’re an Ohio fan and want the Jags to make the playoffs, you might want to lower your Bortles. Cure Bowl Unfortunately, this one’s going to be tough for weird stats, because this is the first meeting between San Jose State and Georgia State, and it’s the first ever Cure Bowl. It’s also the first ever bowl game for Georgia State, so finding lots of weird factoids is tough (since the direction in which the stats can go in is very limited). However, here are the limited things that I could find:
This is the first time ever that San Jose State is playing a bowl game in the Southeast
San Jose State has lost 3 bowl games. All three losses were in California bowl games to teams located in either the Eastern or Central time zone. While this bowl game is not in California, it is to a team on the East Coast.
All three bowl losses by San Jose State (and they haven’t lost a bowl game since 1987) have come when the previous year-end #1 single was recorded by multiple artists

The last year-end #1 single was “Happy” by Pharrell, who is one solo artist. That stat must make the Spartans happy.
San Jose State will be playing in their tenth bowl game. Half of them have started with the letter C. In 1981, 1986 and 1987, they played in the California Bowl, and in 1990, they played in the California Raisin Bowl (a bowl name that actually makes the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl semi-decent in comparison). They’re playing this year in the Cure Bowl.

That means that San Jose State won’t lose a bowl game until the Jaguars, Browns, Lions, or Texans make it. That means they likely won’t lose a bowl game for a very long time.
In all 3 bowl losses that San Jose State has, the band Genesis released a single in that same year. They released “The Knife” in 1971, “Abacab” in 1981 (along with other singles), and “In Too Deep” (along with another single) in 1987. Good news for the Spartans- Genesis did not release a single this year, as you might recall. Bad news for fans of 80s music (which includes me)- Genesis did not release a single this year.
Let’s just point out the fact that the Citrus Bowl now hosts THREE BOWL GAMES annually.
And, in all 3 bowl losses that San Jose State has, the winner of the NCAA Basketball Tournament was located further west than the loser

The winner this year was Duke, who defeated Wisconsin. That’s good news for the Spartans. The bad news for them- they were below .500 this season and technically don’t belong. Technicalities. R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl
Finally, I get to talk about an established bowl game. That’s probably the first time that anyone has ever uttered those words about the New Orleans Bowl. To start off, no team from Louisiana has ever lost in the New Orleans Bowl, unless someone had to lose (Tulane lost in 2013, but they were playing Louisiana-Lafayette, so a Louisiana team had to lose). I bring this up because Louisiana Tech is playing tonight.
Not really a weird stat, but an interesting fact, nonetheless; Orleans Darkwa of Tulane was named the MVP of the 2013 New Orleans Bowl, despite his team losing the game
This is Arkansas State’s sixth bowl game appearance. They’ve appeared in a grand total of 2 bowls: GoDaddy and New Orleans. Talk about variety.
Arkansas State has won two bowl games. Both times, Adele had the #1 album of the previous year (21 was #1 in 2011 and 2012). Not good news for them this year, since Frozen had the #1 album, but it’s good news in 2016 at least.
This is the first time that Louisiana Tech has made back-to-back bowl appearances since 1977 and 1978
When holding their opponent to under 31 points in a bowl game, Louisiana Tech is undefeated. Anything at 31 or above, and they’ve never won

The good news for the Bulldogs is that in the last Sugar Bowl, Ohio State defeated Alabama. Ohio State, by simple geography applications (something a lot of conferences could learn something about), is located further north than Alabama.
Louisiana Tech has won 3 bowl games. All three times, in the previous Sun Bowl, the winner was located further west than the loser

Again, good news for the Bulldogs- Arizona State beat Duke last year in the Sun Bowl, so the advantage goes to Louisiana Tech here.
And finally, in every year that Louisiana Tech won a bowl game, Chicago released an album. It happened in 1977 (Chicago XI), 2008 (Chicago XXXII: Stone of Sisyphus), and 2014 (Chicago XXXVI: Now). Chicago did not release an album this year, so if Louisiana Tech loses this game, it’d be hard for me to say I’m sorry… mainly because I don’t have a rooting interest in this game
Part II with the next batch of bowl games will be up as posted on the schedule. Hope you guys enjoyed.
