The Biggest Crisis in the History of the so-called Secular Republic of Turkey
Wednesday, the 28th of February 2001, was called black Wednesday, due to violent economic eruptions. The robberies, thefts and instability created sudden economic and market break down. This made the already weak Turkish Lira drop its value by 25 to 30 percent (which resulted in the unemployment of 100,000 workers and thousands of journalists). The consequence of this violent shaking is becoming more and more serious. Turkey is now drowning in darkness. A look back at Turkey's recent history finds that it has never had a moment of light. Its history is full of grief, sorrow, scandals and crises. It is known that the 10,000 murders classified as unsolved are committed by the state. After the earthquake the state revealed its true face to the public. It was a state careless about the fact that thousands of people were lying beneath rubble. A state without mercy, both oppressive, and harmful towards its population. A state slow to deal with a natural disaster but yet quick to arrest and persecute Islamic activists during the same period. The state considers it vital to implement the 28th February legislation's (passed in 1997). Legislation is directed towards Muslims and Islam. It is through such legislation Muslims are persecuted and interrogated. Legislation that declared war on Muslims via the Khimar(islamic dress), Quranic schools, prayer and other Islamic practices. This crafty and merciless battle against Islam and the Muslims is being waged through the states institutions and other contraptions of the State. The murders and conspiracies, which have occurred under the name Hizbollah are all lies, their purpose is to distort Islam and to cast fear into the hearts of the population and keep them in an iron grip. All these conspiracies and events remain clear in the population's mind and the effects of fear and horror are still felt. What is of the economic situation of the population? The majority of the population are poor and starved. Families work most of the day but barely earn enough money to feed themselves. Human beings are turned into slaves and robots, fighting each other to survive. The saying: One man's dead is the other man's bread is a ruling principle amongst the population. These are dark times. Never has it been seen in Turkey's history that Satanism, whorehouses, and bars where so great in number. Fatimas, Aishas and Muslims women are being brought up in a Western environment, which in fact is a prostitute environment. The suicide statistics are increasing. Are there any countries whose alcohol and drug situation is worse than Turkeys, perhaps very few. In Turkey there is one library for every 65,000 persons. For every 7 people there is one book. There are approximately 10,000,000 books in the 1226 libraries. On the other hand in Sweden there is 45,000,000 books in only 12 libraries. 61% of the youth do not read books at all. Out of 10,000 peoples only 8 read books. 12% of the Turkish population are illiterate. 43% has 5 years of schooling. 13% has 8 years of schooling. 20% has 10 years of schooling. 7% has a university degree (5% unknown). These percentages are not a result of economic scarcity; no these are the result of backwardness and the standard of values. The democratic culture has possessed the minds of the populations and made them worship wealth and material goods. Turkey has established brotherhood and friendly relationships with the Jews. The same Jews known throughout history as the most treacherous and cowardly people. The Jews who recently in a picture portrayed the prophet Muhammad (saws) as a pig and then distributed this picture publicly. The Jews who murdered prophets. The Jews whom our Lord describes in the Qur'an: Amongst those who have the most enmity and hatred towards the Muslims you will find the Jews and the idol worshippers. Although the Turkish rulers are deeply affected by the western culture, Turkey's love for Europe is not mutual. Do they (the European Parliament) not pass laws and decisions that acknowledge a massacre upon the Armenian population? Do they not keep Turkey out of the Europe's common military? Do they not try to rip Cyprus out of the hands of Turkey? Do they not give Turkey a slap in the face one after the other? Don't they always say that until Turkey is Christian we cannot accept you into the EU? Even after all this the losers continue to insist on being part of Europe. The treacheries are great and words cannot describe the complete picture that reflects Turkey's real circumstances. O you with common sense among the soldiers, thinkers, politicians and business people. When you established this republic you talked of achieving the same level as the modern western civilisation. This was one of the main philosophies behind the establishment of the republic. A modern civilisation in which ugly naked pictures are used to manipulate people. The pursuit of a modern civilisation with an irreligious generation and no mosques, leading instead to Satanists and their evils. With whorehouses and cafe shops spreading evil instead of pure mosques and libraries. Are you satisfied with what has been achieved? You almost worship the Western civilisation and their culture. A culture where an overwhelming part of American and English children are illegitimate. Where an overwhelming part of their women have been raped and where many of them have been sexually abused as children, even by their own parents. This Western civilisation, which you love in this superficial way, is plotting and planning against you night and day. This Western civilisation hates and despises you only because you call yourselves Muslims. Whilst your forefathers like Fatih, Kanuni and Yavuz were under the Islamic Khilafah. The very same Islam and Khilafah which you consider hostile and a path to darkness, but which in reality are the real reasons for your and your forefather's strength. You are sending millions of Turks as slave labour to Europe to clean their toilets at a cheap price, whilst your forefathers went to Europe with the Islamic Khilafah as a leading force - examples of leaders and rulers that spread justice, true guidance and light. Did Ecevit not take a 500 hundred-year-old document to Clinton in October 1999. Found in a church, kept protected respectfully by priests and Christians this document outlined the justice of the Khilafah without prejudice. Whilst the Europeans divided the Muslims into small cartoon states through treacheries like the Lausanne treaty, they attempt to unite themselves in every aspect. Yet you are fanatic about keeping the artificial borders that the Europeans created with their pens. Now these western parliaments conspire to divide Turkey into even smaller parts e.g. more Kurdish areas. You are about to transfer your destiny to the colonialist and hostile USA, even though it struggles to establish a pro American Kurdish state in North Iraq and for which it has designed a role for you where you serve their interests in the Middle East, the Balkans and in Central Asia. It has been 77 years since you abandoned the Islamic model of education, but which scientist, expert, thinker, politician or statesman have you produced, that has not been educated in the USA, England, France or Germany or graduated from the American and French universities. If you deny this then why are you calling those like Kemal Dervis home from USA. You have in fact regressed with your secularised democratic and western project. You are bankrupt and have forced the population to sink with your ship. You have created this dark hole and exposed the population to identity crises and depression. You have not delivered anything but misery and you have done all this in the name of the modern civilisation and at the expense of yourselves, your people's history, deen, personality and culture. You have even alienated them from these ideals by the use of the fire and the iron hand. This is why the word of The Creator of the worlds is a reality for you. Allah says (the meaning being): Allah does not change the condition of a people unless they change what is in themselves. And Allah says, (the meaning being): "Those who turn their back to the merciful injunction will have a miserable life and we will on Judgement day revive them as blind. Then they will say oh my Master, I was not blind why did you revive me as blind, then Allah will say: My injunction came to you but you ignored it that is why I have revived you as blind." And words of wisdom from a true statesman; Omar bin Khattab when he said: We were a degraded people and Allah gave us power by Islam. Allah will give misery to the one who seeks honour and power by other than Islam. Oh Muslims the Messenger of Allah says to you, (the meaning being): "You should know that the wheel of Iman will spin forever. So spin with this wheel in accordance with Allah's book no matter where it spins. You shall know that the state and the book will be separated from each other, but look out, You may never be separated from the book. You should know that you will get rulers that lead you to kufr if you obey them, but if you do not obey them and are rebellious towards them then they will kill you." Then one of those present asked: "Oh The Messenger of Allah what shall we do?" The Messenger of Allah (saw) answered: "Do as Isa's Ummah did. They threw them into flames of fire and mutilated them with saws, but even then they did not compromise with their Deen. It is better to die in the condition where you are obedient towards Allah than to live in a condition where you are disobedient." (Ibn Hacer, al-Metalibul-Aliye 4/267; Haithemi, Mecmauz-zevaid 5/228) Indeed The Book was separated from the state 77 years ago. But O Muslims what have you done? And what are you doing today? O Muslims! Isn't it you who are left to famine and thirst? Is it not you who are oppressed and treated unjustly? Is it not you who say: This is our state, whilst experiencing fraud, injustice, misery and living in a state of no hope? Was it for this that liberation battles were fought, wherein the pure blood of the martyrs was shed? Was it for this dark and miserable state of condition our Sahaba and our Master Muhammad (saws) fought and struggled against? Do we not have a promise from Allah? Did our Prophet (saws) not say, (the meaning being): Do not under any circumstances let yourself be separated from The Book? Where are you heading? How long will you be like sheep that bend your heads to suppression, kufr and misery? When will you be like Seyh Samil the one who said: Rather a beautiful and honourable death than a dammed and miserable death? Or like Hamza who once said: I do not fear that which my eye sees, I fear that which my eye cannot see (Allah). And Salahuddin who said: May it become haram for me to smile and be happy as long as al-Quds is occupied. Or Omar who said: We were a miserable people, Allah honoured us with Islam. Anyone who turns his back on Islam Allah will give him misery. Or Fatih who said to a roman ruler: If you keep on degrading us then I will turn your land into a stable for my horses. Or Mutasim who sent a letter to a kafir ruler stating: To the dog of the Romans from the Khalif of the Muslims. If you do not release our sister, I will send such an army that will begin at you and end at me. That is how Islam and Khilafah gave you honour, pride and status. You where the gentlemen of the world. It was Islam and the Khilafah that brought you into the light and onto the world arena whereas democracy, capitalism and the western culture has brought you to a burning abyss in which you have fallen and become buried in darkness. Wake up from the misery and hopeless condition which democracy, capitalism and the western culture have given you - and stand and shake it off you. Release yourselves from the chains of the western culture which has tied you minds. Then bury this secular state into the earth and liberate yourselves from the jahil death mentioned by Allah's Messenger (the meaning being): "The one who dies without giving baya to the Khaleefah, will die the death of jahilliyah". And this demands the presence of the Khilafah whereby it becomes fard upon you to re-establish the Khilafah. Oh Ulama! O those who have knowledge in Islam, and those who have memorised the Quran! The Messenger of Allah says to you (the meaning being): If two groups in my Ummah are good then my Ummah will be good, if they are corrupt then my Ummah will be corrupt. And these two groups are the ulama and the rulers. Allah (swt) also says (the meaning being): "Those who hide the Book which Allah has sent down and exchange it for a small amount of money, that which they are filling their belly with is nothing but fire. Allah will on the day of Judgement neither talk to them nor will He declare them as innocent". (TMQ Baqarah: 174) Furthermore The Messenger of Allah says (the meaning being): "That which I fear most for my Ummah's peace is those who are known as alims, but who in fact are hypocrites". Because of the dark state of our Ummah's condition, you are much more responsible and sinful. You are to blame for the abyss filled with fire that this ummah has fallen in. You have not fulfilled your responsibility and you continue not to do so. You do not roar as lions for the truth. You do not inform people about the reality of this secularised state. Neither do you tell people about Islam without twisting the verses. You have sold yourselves and your pencils. Do you not know that the ones who established this secular republic state are agents for the Jews and the English - the ones who abolished the Khilafah and the rule of Allah? If you do not know this then ponder over these facts. Lausanne was not just a peace agreement but it was an agreement in the interest of the west, especially the English. Its primary concern was to destroy the ummah, Islam and to make a radical change to Islamic history, language, personality, and even dress. Lord Curzon's reply when criticized by the English parliament because of Turkey's independence was, "Turkey is finished, from now on Turkey will not be able to straighten its spine because we have destroyed Turkey's moral strength and political strength - Islam and the Khilafah." The Jewish rabbi Hayim Nahum, the very man refused by Abdulhamid because he wanted Palestine, was amongst those who abolished Abdulhamid. His family are financial advisers of one of the largest economic institutions and protectors of Jewish rights in Turkey. This Jewish rabbi Hayim Nahum said to Lord Curzon: Acknowledge Turkey's independence and I will promise you they will fall into a condition where they stamp on Islam and that which represents Islam (the Khilafah). Hayim Nahum closely co-operated with Mustafa Kemal and a woman who was working for the British secret agency who later became very close to Ismet Inonu and their relationship became so intense that even the delegation that were at Lausanne became worried. Reflect upon the following conversation between Ismet Inonu and Mustafa Kemal: Mustafa Kemal: What is it that you are reading with such a interest Ismet? Is it concerning that order which the English king will honour me by? Ismet Inonu: What is it with this order? Mustafa Kemal: Have you not read the American and the rest of the world's newspapers. The English king will honour me with the highest order? Ismet Inonu asks in a cold way: Okay and in what concern does he honour you by it? Mustafa Kemal: You above all else Ismet should know that the English people love me much and this is proved by abolishing Lloyd George (an opponent of the Turkish independence). And the English newspaper the Daily Telegraph wrote about Mustafa Kemal the 11. of November 1983: Mustafa Kemal's death was a great death to our country. He as the only dictator with his instinct was a true English ally. It was this triangle which abolished the Khilafah - the English, the Jews and Mustafa Kemal who was both a Jew and an English agent. They made and worked on a clever plan, hiding their innermost motives to abolish the Khilafah and remove Islam to the last. These hypocrites got people to fight the war of independence under slogans such as: Come we shall save the Khilafah and the Quran whilst complimenting the Khaleefahs until they got the power. Then a handful of Jews, English and Mustafa Kemal betrayed them and the people and plunged Islam and the Khilafah's history into darkness. This is the true version of the abandonment of the Khilafah which is in contrast to the false version which I was taught officially. Oh learned Islamic experts! Some people said to Abdullah bin Omar: When we stand and talk in front of the rulers we behave different than when we are among each other. Abdullah bin Omar said: In the time of Prophet Muhammad (saws) we called this hypocrisy. (Bukhari) One of El-Iz bin Abdusselam's students asked him, "When you rebuked the Khaleefah Ayubi where you then not afraid of him? Abdusselam answered him: "My son wallahi (by Allah), when I thought of Allah the almighty then the Khaleefah compared to a little cat." The uncle of Ahmed ibn Hanbal, Ishak said that one day I visited Hanbal in prison and said to him: "As you can see your friends have answered and they are now free. It is only you who is left in prison." Ahmad answered: "Oh my uncle if the learned do not tell the truth, but speak only to escape prison, then the ignorant remains in ignorance and the truth is not made clear." How quickly you have forgotten the hadith where Habab tells: "Those before you were tortured so terribly that their flesh was separated from their bones, but still they hung onto the truth." Ishak said: "After Ibn Hanbal's reply we gave up." So you who are learned in Islam! Take such people as role models. Those such as Hanbal, Sayid Qutb and Taqiudeen An-Nabhani, who refused to live in this miserable condition of darkness and who died honorably working to change the state of affairs. Oh noble Ummah! Your vital cause is to abolish this secular state and re-establish the Khilafah to rule by what Allah has revealed and thereby ensure the sovereignty of Islam. This solution comprehensive and is the solution to all your problems and other vital concerns. Come and take up this vital cause. Hear and obey Allah and His Messenger, Come and join that fight which the Messenger and Sahaba began, do not be ignorant and be of those who pick the temporary life which is filled with misery but instead be of the honoured and mighty who choose the eternal life of the Hereafter. The prophet said concerning this cause: "Wallaahi (by Allah) even though you place the sun in my right hand and the moon in my left I will never give up this cause, until it prevails or my head is separated from my neck." Oh mighty Ummah! Hasten to join the rows that are seeking jannah, the jannah that is prepared for those who fear Allah correctly and worship Him (swt) in the way He (swt) deserves. Allah (swt) says (the meaning being): Oh you who have believe, answer the call of Allah and His Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. (Surah Enfal) Samil Cevval The above article was published in Khilafah Journal (www.khilafah.com)
I hope everyone is doing well. A while ago, someone on this sub fervently denied my claim that Islam and the Quran contain a myriad of misogynistic verses and ahadith (the sayings of Mohammed). As a woman, and on behalf of all oppressed ex-Muslim women, I would like to tell him that unfortunately, he is full of crap. I never resort to ad hominem, but desperate times call for desperate measures, I guess. Please excuse any errors, as English is not my first language, and I am not as eloquent as I would like to be. Quran: "Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance - [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them. But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted and Grand."(Al Nisa, 4:34). Right off the bat, we could notice the problems in this verse. First off, women possess almost no autonomy over their bodies nor decisions in Islam, as men are in charge of women. Men are the sole breadwinners. In Islam, the dowry and nafaqah (financial support) that a husband pays comes with a price: absolute obedience. But we'll address that later. The second part contains a multitude of egregious teachings. The Quran orders a sequence of punishments to deal with disobedient wives. The first being admonishment, then denying them intercourse, followed by beating. Now, a professional mental gymnast or an apologist might jump and say: "BUT YOU HAVE TO BEAT THEM LIGHTLY! WITH A SIWAK (a small stick)!" This is a dumb excuse for domestic violence. Also, the Quran does not explicitly mention that. It left room open for interpretation. This is why many translators chose to disregard the striking part completely, lest men interpret it as they please. Beating someone is a no-no. It does not take a genius to understand that two parties in a healthy, consensual relationship are on an equal footing. Giving one party the right to abuse the other tips the balance. It keeps the wife in an inferior position. Beating is domestic abuse, light or not. A wife is also not a child to be reprimanded. Therefore; there is no proper justification for this verse but sheer violence and misogyny. EDIT: To those saying that “strike” doesn’t mean “hit”, here is the context: قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ : نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ فِي بِنْتِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ وَزَوْجِهَا سَعْدِ بْنِ الرَّبِيعِ أَحَدِ نُقَبَاءِ الْأَنْصَارِ ، فَإِنَّهُ لَطَمَهَا لَطْمَةً فَنَشَزَتْ عَنْ فِرَاشِهِ ، وَذَهَبَتْ إِلَى الرَّسُولِ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ ، وَذَكَرَتْ هَذِهِ الشِّكَايَةَ، وَأَنَّهُ لَطَمَهَا ، وَأَنَّ أَثَرَ اللَّطْمَةِ بَاقٍ فِي وَجْهِهَا، فَقَالَ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ: ( اقْتَصِّي مِنْهُ )، ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهَا : ( اصْبِرِي حَتَّى أَنْظُرَ ) ، فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ: ( الرِّجالُ قَوَّامُونَ عَلَى النِّساءِ ) ، أَيْ مُسَلَّطُونَ عَلَى أَدَبِهِنَّ وَالْأَخْذِ فَوْقَ أَيْدِيهِنّ َ، فَكَأَنَّهُ تَعَالَى جَعَلَهُ أَمِيرًا عَلَيْهَا ، وَنَافِذَ الْحُكْمِ فِي حَقِّهَا، فَلَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ ، قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ( أَرَدْنَا أَمْرًا وَأَرَادَ اللَّه أَمْرًا ، وَالَّذِي أَرَادَ اللَّه خَيْرٌ )" Translation: Ibn Abbas narrated: This Aya was sent for Bint Muhammed Bin Salama, and her husband Saa’d Ibn Al Rabee. He beat her (on her face) and she withdrew from his bed, and went to the prophet. She complained to him that he has slapped her, and left a mark on her cheek. So the prophet said: “beat him back”. Then he told her: “wait until I look into this”. So the Aya: (Men are the rulers of women....) came to place, which means they are the ones responsible for disciplining them and taking their hands, it is as God made a man a prince over his wife, etc etc etc. Source Here are a few videos of Muslim apologists justifying the heinous crime of beating in Islam. Ahadith: "Abu Hurairah reported the Prophet (ﷺ) as saying “When a man calls his wife to come to his bed and she refuses and does not come to him and he spends the night angry, the angels curse her till the morning.” Sahih (Al-Albani) Reference : Sunan Abi Dawud 2141, In-book reference : Book 12, Hadith 96 English translation : Book 11, Hadith 2136. Ah, good ol' Mo and his timeless wisdom. This hadith states that if a woman denies her husband sex, the angels curse her till the morning. She cannot have any excuse to refuse. She could be tired, sick, not in the mood, you name it. Islam prohibits sex during menstruation, but a woman is still obliged to please her husband if he calls her to bed during her period. "Whenever Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) wanted to fondle any of his wives during the periods (menses), he used to ask her to wear an Izar." Sahih al-Bukhari 303, Book 6. (English) reference : Vol. 1, Book 6, Hadith 300. Islam also does not acknowledge marital rape. In fact, go mention it to a scholar and he'll probably call you a blasphemer. Sex need not be consensual at all; a man could force his wife and not be held accountable, nor be counted as a sinner. There are no angels to curse him till the morning. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), "In case there is not before him (an object) like the back of a saddle, a Muslim's Salat (prayer) would be cut off by (the passing of) a woman, a donkey and a black dog." And it concludes: "the black dog is a devil." [Reported by Muslim]. Ah, my favorite. If a a woman, a donkey or a black dog pass in front of a dude who's praying, his prayer would be considered invalid. Even Aisha saw through this bullshit and retorted: "You have made us (i.e. women) dogs" Sahih al-Bukhari 511. Bless her. I will probably post a part 2 soon as I am too exhausted to continue. And frankly, I am horrified by all of this, despite having read it multiple times. Edit: Grammar
Im pretty sure I destroyed this person with FACTS and LOGIC/s but what do you guys think?
In some Youtube comment section Muslim Woman: Here i found it from quara I couldn't actually tell them all in English So i just read it fast and saw that wd kinda have same idea No, Aisha was not 6 and not 9. Married Kadijah at age 25. He was married to only her until she died when he was 50. They were married for nearly 20 years. 2.He remained unmarried from ages 50-52 3.Between ages 53-60, he married his other wives. He seldom spent time with them due to his many travels and the wars. 4.He married these women, despite the ban on more than four wives for the following reasons: to preserve the teachings for the enxt generation. To cement tribal alliances and seal treaties. To care for and protect the widowed and and orphaned women by brining them into his family. To demonstrate the just and compassionate treatment of women. He did not have mistresses nor cast out any women. . To be a role model to Muslims: Most of his wives were old and previously married. Many were from other nations. Two were the widows of former enemies. He did not rape and discard or kill these women as was the custom of the time. These women brought all their people into Islam.
In total, Muhammad married 12 wives. When he died, he had nine wives.
Their names are : Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, Sawdah bint Zam’ah, `A’ishah bint Abi Bakr, Hafsah bint `Umar ibn Al-Khattab, Zaynab bint Khuzaymah, Umm Salama, Zaynab bint Jahsh, Juwayriah bint Al-Harith, Umm Habibah, Safiyah bint Huyay ibn Akhtab, Maymunah bint Al-Harith, Maria the Copt.
Aisha was Muhammad’s last wife and the considered the greatest woman in Islam. She came from a family that was noted for their learning and education. she, herself, was very well educated and was a teacher, cleric, and military leader during her lifetime. She was engaged to another before Muhammad, but the engagement was broken when the fiance refused to convert to Islam. Was Aisha nine years old when married? No. But don’t the Hadiths say she was? Some do, but they all quote one very old man and are considered weak Hadiths. The Hadiths are the recollections of Muhammad’s Companions. Some are strong and well documented and supported. Others are weak because they are not supported, not witnessed by others, contradict others that are supported. Here’s how we know Aisha was much older when married: Aisha was always referred to as bikr, which literally means “an adult unmarried woman who is a virgin.” She was never referred to as a jariyah, which is a “young girl.” “And make not over your property (property of the orphan), which Allah had made a (means of) support for you, to the weak of understanding, and maintain them out of it, clothe them and give them good education. And test them until they reach the age of marriage. Then if you find them maturity of intellect, make over them their property...” (Quran, 4:5-6). No seven year old, nor nine year old is mature enough to handle her own finances and property, yet Aisha was given hers at marriage. More information on this area is here: http://www.ilaam.net/articles/ayesha.html Aisha’s exact birthday is unknown, but she was born before 610 CE when Islam was revealed. Aisha is recorded as accepting Islam shortly after it was revealed. She could not have done so as an infant or toddler. The youngest she could have accepted Islam would be 7 y/o, but that’s a guess. She was married in 622 CE 12 years after she accepted Islam. (7 + 12 =19 years). Further, Aisha fought in the Battles of Badr and Uhud (624/5 respectively). No one under 15 fought in those battles, let alone be a leader of them. Also, Asma, Aisha’s eldest sister (by ten years) died at age 100, 72 years after Aisha’s marriage. Process of elimination and mathematics, Aisha could not have been married before she was 14 and the consummation before she was almost 20. “The Quran states a woman's consent is essential, and the Sunnah confirms that both Aisha's betrothal and consummation occurred with Aisha's enthusiastic agreement. In fact, some even imply she went against the initial wishes of her Dad!” By mathematical reasoning: 622 + 72 = 694 -100= 594 year of Asma’s birth. 622-594= 28 yr of Asma at Aisha’s wedding Asma is recorded as ten years older than Aisha. Therefore: 28-10= 18 Aisha’s age at wedding. More detailed info on her age is here: My response: I just want to say I don't dislike you personally and I don't think you are a bad person I am just trying to show you that your interpretation isn't widely excepted based on major islamic sources. I saw this before and this debatable to say the least. I'm just going to respond to what was said about Aisha. Firstly, if you look at all the dates when Muhammad married his wives most of them married him after Aisha with the exception of Khadijia and Sauda. I can say for certain that he married Safiyya after Aisha. As I have demonstrated there has been many Hadiths and non-Hadiths both from many different sources that consistently confirm that widely believed age of 6 and 9 and you can find them in said collections one of which was narrated by Aisha herself (Shahih Bukhari Hadith 2661) which I do believe did refer to Aisha as "جريح" or "Jariyah" at one point. Even someone who claims that Aisha was older said she was referred as such(https://medium.com/@talalrafi/was-aisha-9-years-old-when-she-married-the-prophet-muhammad-20ae7516e428). As for "Bikr" this post is not consistent with the one you gave me (https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-meaning-of-bikr-in-Arabic-both-classical-and-modern-What-are-all-possible-meanings-of-it-Is-it-plural) As for Quran, 4:5-6 the translation that I have says https://quran.com/4?reading=false It clearly states here that marriageable age doesn't always mean "capable of sound judgment" and only when they have that can they get their wealth. When comparing it to yours it seems that the intended meaning does not change. “And make not over your property (property of the orphan), which Allah had made a (means of) support for you, to the weak of understanding, and maintain them out of it, clothe them and give them good education. And test them until they reach the age of marriage. Then if you find them maturity of intellect, make over them their property...” Again we see that "maturity of intellect" and "the age of marriage" are not symonomise but they aren't mutually exclusive either I'll give you that. Finally I could not access any of your links but I'll try and respond to some of your statements. I could not find anything that suggested that Aisha was fighting in the battles but according to Bukhari V2 P381 she was seen carrying water for the wounded. Assuming she was born in 612 CE this is defiantly something an 11 year old can do. Asma was born before the revelation of the Quron and she was one of the first Muslims according to Ibn Ishaq so she was defiantly older than Aisha but we know that they had different mothers because Asma's mother is divorced from Abu Bakr and Abu Bakr had a daughter(Umm Kulthum bint Abu Bakr) who has born shortly after his death so its not unfathomable that Aisha could have been born later in his life. If I don't sound convincing that's fine. I don't need to be convinced that the problematic Hadiths are not to be believed other Muslims do. Only muslims can change the narrative surrounding islam. I personally do not prescribe to Christianity either but modern christians are much different than christians even 50 years ago. It was christians that pushed narratives to make Christianity less homophobic and sexist not Christianity itself(in my personal view).
CMV: If it is acceptable to marry a 6-year old because "back then" it was normal, it should also be acceptable to be a slave trader at 17th century.
I just try to understand whether and why there are double standards when it comes to people beliefs/morality in different periods and societies. I read the other day about Edward Colston's statue that was toppled a few days ago in Bristol. I Didn't know of him so I might miss some important details but to my understanding he was a slave trader of 17th century at Bristol area that was considered a philanthropist because he supported and endowed schools, almshouses, hospitals and churches in Bristol, London and elsewhere many of which survive to this day. There are memorials, statues and schools/streets named after him more than 300 years later. Now I don't know whether he was indeed that important but let's assume for a moment that he was and yet people toppled his statue on the basis that he was also a slave trader. And since nowadays slave trading is considered immoral/unethical and of course illegal we shouldn't keep him as a symbol to look up to. On the other hand we seem to be very acceptable to what other historical figures and societies did. Related to the title we know for example that Muhammad had married a 6 (or 9 or 10) years old girl named Aisha. Again I might not be well informed regarding this and I know that not everybody agrees to the actual age of Muhammad's youngest wife but my assumption is that even if it was somehow proven that she was 6 years old, most of the Muslims of nowadays wouldn't stop believing to their religion even though it is considered immoral/unethical and of course illegal to do such thing today. And in order to show that it's not for a specific religion, I can also mention Paul the Apostle's letter to Ephesians where he clearly stands in favor of slavery and actively promote the slaves' submission to their masters like if God wanted it (which actually could be seen as worse that trading slaves since you convince them that God actually wants them to be slaves. So eve if they could escape it they shouldn't). And of course there are so many more examples of important historical/religious figures that also did/actively supported things that are considered very wrong nowadays. Also most if not all of the societies that I know of when it comes to wars treated their enemies in a very bad/immoral/unethical and of course illegal way based on today's standards and laws for war crimes from ancient Greeks and Vikings to native Americans/African/Asian tribes etc. Yet there are people from those periods that are considered even today very important and are admired regardless these actions on what is a moral treatment of the defeated enemy. Also in the future there might be a period where breeding animals for food or even as pets would be considered very immoral/unethical and of course illegal and nobody would even think of doing such an atrocity to an animal. Does this mean that every farmer that did it in the past and otherwise was considered really important for their time should be forgotten and deleted from history because the new standards say so? Actually I don't argue that what happened with the statue is necessarily wrong, I tend to believe it but don't have a very strong opinion on the matter yet. I just say that if we accept that we should stop considering historical figures as important and positive examples because of beliefs/actions that were acceptable back then but not now, we should do it for every figure/society. And in this case I believe that too many would be removed. And with that maybe also any symbol that wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the slaves like Parthenon or the Pyramids. So you are welcome to change my view on this and if possible not based on the exact truth of the historical facts I mention but the general idea of them. (p.s. excuse my English, not my first language).
Salam Alaykum, those are some notices about this issue because I couldn't find a lot of attaching about it in English even it's important to know, so I'm trying to clarify some of it. the agreement in the shi'i hadith books: from Kitab Sulaym (Mu'tabar), hadith number 4: [ Ali (as) said to him: "You have completed your cursed Sahifa, which you agreed upon in Ka'abah (i.e if Muhammad is killed or dies you people will take away the Amr from Ahlubayt.) Abu Bakr asked: "How did you know about this? We did not tell you." Ali said, "O Zubayr you, and Salman you, and Abu Dhar and Miqdad you - I am asking you for the sake of Allah and for the sake of Islam, did you not hear the Holy Prophet say when you were listening: "This one and that one- until he counted upto five- they have made between them a written agreement and have vowed to keep it if I am killed or I die?" They replied: "Indeed, yes we heard that these people have made an agreement and vowed to keep it if he is killed or dies. They will overpower you and O Ali, they will remove you from this caliphate." ] Kitab Sulaym is one of the most authentic books, and Sulaym mentioned their names several times and even stories about them before death. btw, this Salim ( one of the 5 ) is the star of the Suckling of a Grown Man story. --- Narrated by Abu Basir from Abu Abdillah Imam Sadiq (as) about the saying of Allah (swt), "Nowhere is there a secret counsel between three persons but He is the fourth of them, nor (between) five but He is the sixth of them, nor less than that nor more but He is with them wheresoever they are; then He will inform them of what they did on the day of resurrection: surely Allah is Cognizant of all things". (58:7) Imam (as) said, "This was Revealed regarding Fulan and Fulan (i.e. Abu Bakr and Umar), and Abu Ubeyda Ibn Al-Jarrah, and Abdul Rahman Ibn Awf, and Saalim Mawla Abu Huzeyfa, and Al-Mugheira Bin Sho’ba, when they wrote the agreement in between them and took a pledge and agreed that if Muhammad (saww) were to pass away, they would not let the Caliphate to be in the Clan of Hashim, nor the Prophet-hood ever, So Allah (swt) Revealed this Verse with regards to them". I (Abu Basir) said, about the saying of Allah (swt), "Or have they settled an affair? Then surely, we are the settlers. Or do they think that We do not hear what they conceal and their secret discourses? Indeed (We do), and Our messengers are by them, to record" (43:79-80). Imam (as) said, "And these two Verse were Revealed regarding them (i.e who wrote the agreement as mentioned above) on that day". Imam (as) further said, "Perhaps you think that there is a day resembling the day of the writing of the agreement? (No) Except for the day Al-Husain (as) was killed, and thus it had preceded in the Knowledge of Allah (swt) which He Made known to the Prophet (saww) that when the agreement was written down, Al-Husain (as) was Killed\*, and the kingdom would exit from the Clan of Hashim and indeed all of that did take place." *****This indicates that the foundation for the killing of Imam Husain (as) laid when the agreement was written. The reference to this agreement can be found even in the Prophets (saww) sermon of Ghadeer] [Source: al-Kafi, Vol. 8, Pg. 179, Hadith. 202] Note: As per chain of narrators, hadith is classified asReliable(موثق) by Allama Majlisi in Mir’aat al-Uqool, Vol, 27, Pg. 68 here, Mu'az is missed, and others mentioned, the others came later, but Mu'az may be lost due tonarrating, forgotten, a mistake between Abdul and him, etc. --- A number of our companions, from sahl Bin Ziyad, from Ibn Fazzal, from Sufyan Bin Ibrahim, Al Jareer, from Al Haris Bin Al Haseyra Al Asady, (It has been narrated) from Abu Ja’far asws, said, ‘I had gone with my father to the Kabah, so I Prayed upon the red marble slab between the two Pillars. Al Kafi – V 4 – The Book of Hajj Ch 212 H 28 I see this isnad as reliable for me, but it's obvious there is Tasheef about the last man, also Mu'az is missed too, he could be missed because he wasn't in that session exclusively. the smell: 1.the secret of Ubai: It is narrated on the authority of Qais Ibn Ubad that he said: While I was standing in the first row in the mosque, a man pulled me from behind and moved me away, and stood in my place. By Allah, I did not know how I was praying. When he turned away behold! He was Ubai Ibn Ka'b. He said: "O young man! Might Allah keep you away from evil! This is a pledge which The Messenger of Allah "peace be upon him" took from or that we should be next to him ( standing for prayer)." Then he faced the Qiblah and said thrice: "Those of tied banners (the appointed governors) have been ruined, by the Lord of the Kaaba" he further said: "By Allah! I'm not sorry for them, but I'm sorry for such as whom they lead astray." I (a sub-narrator) asked: "O Abu Ya'qubl What does he mean by those of tied banners?" he said: 'The appointed governors." [An-Nasa'i V.1 H.805: Authentic] this hadith is mentioned many times, and from 3 men who saw Ubai. الراوي : أبي بن كعب | المحدث : الوادعي | المصدر : الصحيح المسند | الصفحة أو الرقم : 8 | خلاصة حكم المحدث : صحيح this is another Sahih hadith in al-Sahih al-Musnad for Alwadi'i, the same hadith from Qais nothing interesting except he mentioned that Umar with the sahabah were there. Al-Tabaqat v.3 p.501, isnad is Hasan ( that is from me), the hadith from Jundub Al-Bajali, I will brief it: Jundub is saying that he came to Madinah to learn about Islam, in the mosque he found a man, he describes him a bit, he was saying: "Those of tied banners have been ruined, by the Lord of the Kaaba, I'm not sorry for them" several times. he talked with him a bit, then he asked others who is that? they said: "the Sayyid of Muslims, Ubai b. Ka'b" he followed him to his home and describe it, salam, salam, then he asked him where you from? he said Iraq, he said: the most people asking questions! (there is Tasheef), Jundub got angry, he kneeled, made dua because he is treated like this while he is getting tired etc to reach the place, Ubai started to cry and to conciliate him and said: no! I didn't mean this, then he continued: O Allah, if you let me alive to Friday, I will say what I heard from the prophet, and I won't afraid anyone. when he said that I went and wait the Friday, but when it's Thursday, he was out, he saw the streets full of people, he asked what happened ? they said: the sayyid of Muslims Ubai, died. then he meets someone in Iraq, told him about that, he said like, unfortunately, he couldn't tell you. Al-Tabaqat v.3 p.380, Sahih (from me), I will brief: Utai came to the sahaba to learn and looks like he is not treated well so he said that to Ubai and blame the sahaba so he said: by Allah, if I lived to this Friday I will say something and I won't care if you let me alive or killed me! Utai came on fraidy and the same thing as Jundub, in the end, he says something like by Allah I didn't see something got hidden like that. - Sunnis translated اهل العقد or اهل العقدة with Those of tied banners, in Arabic العقد mostly means contract/agreement and can be used for a close meaning too. Oxford... for عقدة. a similar phrase used later is. - I'm not commenting a lot because it's clear, but some Sunni scholars tried to say those are the Amirs, which is far, where did it mention that Amirs were unusual, are ruined and leading Muslims to astray (hell) in the time of Umar? how Umar was letting them like that where is his justice and how is that is the so-called caliphate of the 30 years? Ubai is in Madina where is the caliph! even people in his time didn't know what he means. do you think all of that is happened by chance? why telling the hadith of the prophet may lead to his death? Sunni books are actually saying even for bad Amirs the prophet said you must be submissive, so how can it lead to astray and need to make all of that while the prophet told you to be submissive? ... --------
do Aisha knows about that agreement?
weird hadiths were said by Aisha which is supporting the whole idea. if you asked any Sunni, which is the most beloved by the prophet, the best of the Sahaba, he would say Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, that's what they believe and that's how the 10 are arranged, there are some more hadiths could support it or some of it: I said to my father(ali): Which of the people after the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) is best? He replied: Abu Bakr. I then asked: Who comes next? He said: ‘Umar. I was then afraid of asking him who came next, and he might mention ‘Uthman, so I said: You came next, O my father? He said: I am only a man among the Muslims. Sunan Abi Dawud 4629 - sahih Narrated Ibn `Umar: We used to compare the people as to who was better during the lifetime of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) . We used to regard Abu Bakr as the best, then `Umar, and then `Uthman Sahih al-Bukhari 3655 - but putting Abu Ubaidah before everyone after Abu Bakr and Umar, isn't that strange? "I said to 'Aishah: 'Which of the Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) were the most beloved to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)?' She said: 'Abu Bakr.' I said: 'Then who?' She said: 'Then Abu 'Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah.'" He said: "I said: 'Then who?''" He said: "Then she was silent."al-tirmizi Vol. 1, Book 46, Hadith 3657 - Sahih *idk why they missed Umar between them but it's there in Arabic. while: Ahmad, Abu Dawud and al-Nasai have recorded with a sahīh chain from al-Nu’man b. Bashir: Abu Bakr sought permission to enter the house of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and heard the voice of ‘Aishah, very loud, and she was saying (to the Prophet), “I have known that ‘Ali is more beloved to you than my father" Al Haythemī also says: صحيح (sahīh) how she knows the first information did she saw anything like that in Abu Ubaidah to compare: `Ali remained behind the Prophet (ﷺ) during the Ghazwa of Khaibar as he was suffering from eye trouble. He then said, "(How can) I remain behind the Prophet (ﷺ) ," and followed him. So when he slept on the night of the conquest of Khaibar, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "I will give the flag tomorrow, or tomorrow the flag will be taken by a man who is loved by Allah and His Apostle , and (Khaibar) will be conquered through him, (with Allah's help)" While every one of us was hopeful to have the flag, it was said, "Here is `Ali" and the Prophet (ﷺ) gave him the flag and Khaibar was conquered through him (with Allah's Help). Sahih al-Bukhari 4209 another hadith: I heard `A'isha as saying and she was asked as to whom Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) would have nominated as his successor if he had to nominate one at all. She said: Abu Bakr. It was said to her: Then whom after Abu Bakr? She said: `Umar. It was said to her. Then whom after `Umar? She said: Abu `Ubaida b. al-Jarrah, and then she kept quiet at this. Sahih Muslim 2385 even that the prophet according to the Sunni books mentions the most important result is by the ruling of imam ali: Narrated ‘Alī: People said: “O Messenger of Allāh! Whom should we choose as our leader after you?” He answered: “If you choose Abū Bakr, you will find him trustworthy, and running away from the pleasures of this world and seeking the Hereafter. If you choose ‘Umar, you will find him strong and trustworthy. But If you choose ‘Alī, although I do not think you will, you will find him to be a Guide, one who is Guided, and one who will take you to the Right Path.” source - grade: sahih that's if we didn't say he is appointed already! Rakin narrated from Vahab Ben Hamze that said '' I was with Imam Ali (peace be upon him) from Medina to Mecca. During this path, he did behaviors that were not pleasant for me. Therefore, I said '' when I came back the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants), I will complain about you in the presence of Hazrat Muhammad''. When I arrived Medina, I met the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) and said '' I saw such and such behaviors''. Then the messenger of God bade '' do not talk about him in this way; he will have priority over human after me''. source - grade: sahih-hasan and there is more known hadith like al-Ghadir etc. + while the Saqifah: Narrated Umar: Abu Bakr said: and I am pleased to suggest that you choose either of these two men, so take the oath of allegiance to either of them as you wish. Picture this historical setting: A 49 year old man asks his best friend if he could have his permission to marry his 6 year old daughter. His friend agrees. The man then visits his best friend’s house and speaks with the 6 year old daughter. Her parents watch as the he proposes marriage to the child. He is serious; he wants to marry the little girl and is asking for her consent. The little child says nothing; she only stares at him in silence. The Islamic source materials state that Muhammad proposed marriage to Aisha when she was 6. He assumed her silence constituted her consent. Some 2 to 3 years later, just after he had fled to Medina, he consummated his marriage with her. He was 52 and she was 9. This occurred prior to Aisha’s first menses and by Islam’s legal definition Aisha was still considered a child. Islam teaches that a child enters adulthood at the beginning of puberty. (This is scientifically inaccurate, the onset of puberty does not equal adulthood – see Appendix 3). From "The Life of Muhammad" (Sirat Rasul Allah) by Ibn Ishaq:
Suhayli, ii. 79: In the riwaya of Yunus I. I. recorded that the apostle saw her (Ummu'lFadl) when she was a baby crawling before him and said, 'If she grows up and I am still alive I will marry her.' But he died before she grew up and Sufyan b. al-Aswad b. 'Abdu'l-Asad al-Makhzumi married her and she bore him Rizq and Lubab
The bottom line is Muhammad, the creator of Islam, revered by his followers, had sex with a child! Worse, Muhammad's action and teachings on marriage established an Islamic precedent and Islamic law allows female children to be married off and engaged in sex provided they are able to handle a man’s penis (Quran 65:4). As will be shown, this leads to physical, and psychological, damage to the child.
EVIDENCE THAT ISLAM ALLOWS CHILDREN TO ENGAGE IN SEX BEFORE MENSTRUATION
First, we need to establish that Islam allows female children to be married and engaged in sex prior to their first menses (prepubescent). For that we turn to the Islamic source materials. Starting with the Quran:
If you are in doubt concerning those of your wives who have ceased menstruating, know that their waiting period shall be three months. The same shall apply to those who have not menstruated. As for pregnant women, their term shall end with their confinement. God will ease the hardship of the man who fears him. 65:4, Dawood
Brother Sam Shamoun comments on this verse:
The surrounding context deals with the issue of the waiting period for divorce, and remarriage. The Quran is telling Muslims to wait for a certain period of time before making the divorce final or deciding to forego it. The Quran exhorts men to wait a period of three months in the case of women who either are no longer menstruating or haven’t even started their menstrual cycles! (Source)
Since Muslim men are to wait 3 months before divorcing a prepubescent child it means that they have been engaging in sex with those children. Borrowing from Sam’s work (*) I quote three Islamic scholars commentary related to 65:4 and the subject of sex with prepubescent children: Ibn Kathir writes regarding 65:4
, "The `Iddah is made up of cleanliness and the menstrual period." So he divorces her while it is clear that she is pregnant, or he does not due to having sex, or since he does not know if she is pregnant or not. This is why the scholars said that there are two types of divorce, one that conforms to the Sunnah and another innovated. The divorce that conforms to the Sunnah is one where the husband pronounces one divorce to his wife when she is not having her menses and without having had sexual intercourse with her after the menses ended. One could divorce his wife when it is clear that she is pregnant. As for the innovated divorce, it occurs when one divorces his wife when she is having her menses, or after the menses ends, has sexual intercourse with her and then divorces her, even though he does not know if she became pregnant or not. There is a third type of divorce, which is neither a Sunnah nor an innovation where one divorces A YOUNG WIFE WHO HAS NOT BEGUN TO HAVE MENSES, the wife who is beyond the age of having menses, and divorcing one's wife before the marriage was consummated. (Source; bold and capital emphasis ours)
Al-Tabari said regarding 65:4:
The interpretation of the verse "And those of your women as have passed the age of monthly courses, for them the 'Iddah (prescribed period), if you have doubt (about their periods), is three months; and for those who have no courses [(i.e. they are still immature) their 'Iddah (prescribed period) is three months likewise". He said: The same applies to the 'idaah for girls who do not menstruate because they are too young, if their husbands divorce them after consummating the marriage with them. Tafseer al-Tabari, 14/142 (Source: Islam Q&A (www.islam-qa.com) (Question #12708: Is it acceptable to marry a girl who has not yet started her menses?)
Regarding sex with prepubescent children, Abu-Ala’ Maududi states:
"Therefore, making mention of the waiting-period for girls who have not yet menstruated, clearly proves that it is not only permissible to give away the girl at this age but it is permissible for the husband to consummate marriage with her. Now, obviously no Muslim has the right to forbid a thing which the Qur’an has held as permissible." (Maududi, volume 5, p. 620, note 13, emphasis added)
It is clear; Muslim men can engage in sex with prepubescent children!
EVIDENCE THAT AISHA WAS 9 WHEN SHE CONSUMMATED HER MARRIAGE
Now that we’ve established that Islam allows husbands to engage in sex with their child-brides, let’s move on to Muhammad and Aisha. The Islamic source materials state that Aisha was 9 when they consummated their marriage. From the hadith of Bukhari, volume 5, #234
"Narrated Aisha: The prophet engaged me when I was a girl of six. We went to Medina and stayed at the home of Harith Kharzraj. Then I got ill and my hair fell down. Later on my hair grew (again) and my mother, Um Ruman, came to me while I was playing in a swing with some of my girl friends. She called me, and I went to her, not knowing what she wanted to do to me. She caught me by the hand and made me stand at the door of the house. I was breathless then, and when my breathing became all right, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There in the house I saw some Ansari women who said, "Best wishes and Allah's blessing and a good luck." Then she entrusted me to them and they prepared me (for the marriage). Unexpectedly Allah's messenger came to me in the forenoon and my mother handed me over to him, and at that time I was a girl of nine years of age."
Bukhari vol. 7, #65:
"Narrated Aisha that the prophet wrote the marriage contract with her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old. Hisham said: "I have been informed that Aisha remained with the prophet for nine years (i.e. till his death).""
From the hadith of Muslim, volume 2, #3309
Aisha reported: Allah’s Messenger married me when I was six years old, and I was admitted to his house at the age of nine….
From the hadith of the Sunan of Abu Dawud, volume 2, #2116
"Aisha said, "The Apostle of Allah married me when I was seven years old." (The narrator Sulaiman said: "Or six years."). "He had intercourse with me when I was 9 years old."
From "The History of Tabari", volume 9, page 131
"Then the men and women got up and left. The Messenger of God consummated his marriage with me in my house when I was nine years old. Neither a camel nor a sheep was slaughtered on behalf of me"...(The Prophet) married her three years before the Emigration, when she was seven years old and consummated the marriage when she was nine years old, after he had emigrated to Medina in Shawwal. She was eighteen years old when he died.
From the Encyclopedia of Islam, under "Aisha":
"Some time after the death of Khadija, Khawla suggested to Muhammad that he should marry either Aisha, the 6 year old daughter of his chief follower, or Sawda Zama, a widow of about 30, who had gone as a Muslim to Abyssinia and whose husband had died there. Muhammad is said to have asked her to arrange for him to marry both. It had already been agreed that Aisha should marry Djubayr Mutim, whose father, though still pagan, was friendly to the Muslims. By common consent, however, this agreement was set aside, and Muhammad was betrothed to Aisha... The marriage was not consummated until some months after the Hidjra, (in April 623, 624). Aisha went to live in an apartment in Muhammad's house, later the mosque of Median. She cannot have been more than ten years old at the time and took her toys to her new home."
SUMMARY OF THE EVIDENCE OF AISHA'S AGE The above references are just a sample of the Islamic source material statements that Aisha was 9 when her marriage was consummated. Over and over again the great Islamic scholars state that Aisha was 9 when her marriage was consummated. No serious Muslim scholar doubts this. Generally it is only embarrassed Muslims living in the West who challenge her age. For a more in-depth presentation of the evidence of Aisha’s age being 9, see Sam’s article here.
EVIDENCE THAT MUHAMMAD HAD SEX WITH AISHA PRIOR TO HER FIRST MENSES
We’ve seen that Islamic doctrine allows for prepubescent children to be engaged in intercourse, and that Aisha was 9 when Muhammad had sex with her for the first time. Now we’ll look at the evidence and see that Aisha was prepubescent when Muhammad had sex with her. The hadith state that Aisha was taken to Muhammad’s house, as his bride, when she was 9 and she took her dolls with her as play toys. I’ll borrow some excerpts from Sam’s article here:
'A'isha reported that Allah's Apostle married her when she was seven years old, and he was taken to his house AS A BRIDE WHEN SHE WAS NINE, AND HER DOLLS WERE WITH HER; and when he (the Holy Prophet) died she was eighteen years old. (Sahih Muslim, Book 008, Number 3311) 'A'isha reported that she used to PLAY WITH DOLLS in the presence of Allah's Messenger and when her playmates came to her they left (the house) because they felt shy of Allah's Messenger whereas Allah's Messenger sent them to her. (Sahih Muslim, Book 031, Number 5981) When the Apostle of Allah arrived after the expedition to Tabuk or Khaybar (the narrator is doubtful), the draught raised an end of a curtain which was hung in front of her store-room, revealing some dolls which belonged to her. He asked: What is this? She replied: My dolls. Among them he saw a horse with wings made of rags, and asked: What is this I see among them? She replied: A horse. He asked: What is this that it has on it? She replied: Two wings. He asked: A horse with two wings? She replied: Have you not heard that Solomon had horses with wings? She said: Thereupon the Apostle of Allah laughed so heartily that I could see his molar teeth. (Sunan Abu Dawud, Book 41, Number 4914)
A Muslim scholar says that it is okay for Aisha (and other children) to play with dolls because they are not considered adults:
Al-Khattaabee said: From this Hadeeth it is understood that playing with dolls (al-banaat) is not like the amusement from other images (suwar) concerning which the threat (wa'eed) of punishment is mentioned. The only reason why permission in this was given to 'Aa'isha (may Allah be pleased with her) is because SHE HAD NOT, AT THAT TIME, REACHED THE AGE OF PUBERTY. (Source)
Examining the evidence from the previous sections we see
Islam allows sex with prepubescent children who are married
Aisha was playing with dolls after she consummated her marriage with Muhammad
Under Islam’s rules, female children were allowed to play with dolls because they had not yet entered puberty, i.e. had their first menses and became adults.
Therefore, the only conclusion that can be made is that Muhammad was having sex with a Aisha while still was a child! The Quran allows this, Muhammad did this, Aisha stated this, and the scholars affirm this. Now Islam’s children have to deal with this.
DISCUSSION
Most Muslims accept what the Hadith, Sira, and Muslim scholars say: Muhammad consummated his marriage to Aisha when she was 9. But many defend this by asserting that Aisha had had her first period, thus she entered puberty, and thus was considered an adult. Somehow they’ve been misled into believing that Aisha had her first menses before she consummated her marriage with Muhammad. These same Muslims criticize the act of sexual intercourse with a girl who had not had her first menses. They would say that a man would be having sex with a child and that that was wrong. But as shown above if one studies Islam’s teachings he will see that Islam allows sexual intercourse prior to the child’s first menses. Tragically, today throughout much of the Mideast, girls as young as nine are often married by men old enough to be their grandfather, just as Muhammad was old enough to be Aisha’s grandfather. Muslims know in their heart that it is just plain wrong for a man to be using a child for sex, married or not. That is why so many of them have gone to great lengths to defend Muhammad’s relationship with Aisha because they assumed that she had her first period prior to their sexual consummation. One such Muslim is Robert Squires. He has gone to great lengths to defend Muhammad’s action, predicated upon the assumption that Aisha had her first menses. You can read Robert Squires article here. Here are some quotes from Mr. Squires’ article:
Puberty = Maturity = Marriage
Part of the wisdom behind the Prophet's marriage to Aishah just after she reached puberty is to firmly establish this as a point of Islamic Law, even though it was already cultural norm in all Semitic societies
There are many other references which should prove to any intelligent person what anthropologists and historians already know: in centuries past, people were considered ready for marriage when they reached puberty.
Unfortunately for Squires, if he studies the Islamic source materials, if he studies the analysis of the great scholars of Islam, he could only conclude that Islam allows sex with prepubescent children and that Muhammad had sex with Aisha prior to her first menses. Muhammad’s consummation with Aisha occurred before she reached puberty. Muhammad fails Squire’s "cultural" test. Pity Robert Squires. He has put his heart, his mind, his strength, his reputation, indeed his very soul, into defending his prophet Muhammad. He built his defense upon the assumption that Aisha had menstruated. Now he faces the ugly fact that Muhammad has indeed done the dirty deed, and made a fool out of him. Muhammad has gone to a depth of depravity that Squires rejects as wrong. Squires’ beloved Muhammad was indeed an ugly man having sex with a child and Squires is stuck having to confront the naked truth. By Squires’ own standards, by Squires’ own reasoning, by Squires’ own sense of right and wrong, Muhammad did very wrong. And above all, weep for the Muslim children who are allowed by their faith to be used for sex. Later I’ll mention some studies and writings that show that when children are put into the situation that Muhammad and Islam allow they indeed suffer. Islam brings misery upon its female children. MUHAMMAD THE GOOD EXAMPLE? Muhammad claimed greatness: his god praised Muhammad in the Quran:
"Surely in the Messenger of God you have a good example". 33:21
But when we examine what he did, we repudiate it. He was not "a good example." Let me ask you a question: If Muhammad were living in the West today and did what he did, wouldn’t he be thrown in jail and denounced as a pervert? Yes or no? I thank God that our standards are better than his and those of Islam when it comes to protecting children. If Muhammad were a true prophet, why are the world’s standards better than his? Why are pagan cultures standards better than Islam’s? Where was the mercy or benefit for the children of Islam? Let’s take a deeper look. Why do we find it objectionable? Muhammad did not live in our culture or under our law. Is the Western rejection of this practice merely cultural or is there a scientific or medical reason to reject Muhammad’s, and Islam’s norm? Indeed there are medical and scientific reasons to reject Islam’s position. If Islam were truly a scientific faith it would not have erred this greatly. This question is discussed at length in Appendix 4. As mentioned earlier, some Muslims and Western writers have written that Aisha did not have sex with Muhammad until she was 14 or so. I've never seen any textual support for their position. They only have opinion and conjecture. Since the thought of their prophet committing such an act is embarrassing to them so they invent, or re-write, or ignore, documented Islamic history to make it more acceptable to their minds and the minds of other Western people as well. A CASE STUDY As note above, there are many Muslims who know that it is just plain wrong and harmful for men to have sex with children, as Muhammad had sex with Aisha. Muslim countries have passed laws outlawing what Muhammad had done. In Indonesia a similar situation occurred. A Muslim cleric married a 12 year old girl. Here is the link: The Jakarta Post, 27 October 2008. Fox News then picked it up: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,444255,00.html I’ll let the Indonesian Muslims make my argument and quote from the article:
All those involved in the case, he said, could be charged under Articles 81, 82 and 83 of the 2002 Law on Child Protection. If found guilty, they would face a maximum sentence of 15 years in jail and a fine of Rp 300 million (US$30,000), for "forcing", "swindling" and/or "trading" a minor to sleep with another person. … Hadi said it would require a psychological test to prove whether the cleric could be termed a pedophile. "We hope the police or the court, if the case is brought to trial, can determine this," he added. Pujiono reportedly married Lutfiana as his second wife in August and has declared he plans to marry two even younger girls -- a seven-year-old and a nine-year old. The "eccentric" cleric refused to name the children out of concern it would spark "wider criticism". … "Puji is a community leader who has many followers. If he is allowed to continue doing this, we're afraid that many other people will follow suit. This will victimize children," he said, adding that minors are neither physically nor mentally ready to engage in sexual activity.
Those in leadership in Indonesia recognize this for what it is: children being victimized, that they are not ready mentally or physically to be engaging in sex. It is fortunate that the Muslims in Indonesia are in better touch with reality and science than the Muslim leadership in the Mideast. The Indonesia Muslims are more caring for their children, the most vulnerable in their society. Instead of copying Muhammad stupidly they looked after the welfare of their children in this case.
CONCLUSION
Muhammad proposed to and married Aisha when she was 6. He had intercourse with her when she was 9 prior to her first menses. Islam establishes this practice. Since girls at that age are not fully mature either physically, emotionally, or psychologically, we know it is wrong for a man, regardless of his age, to engage a child in sexual relations. Muhammad was just a man, he was not a prophet. What he did is nothing more than instituting man’s sex drive. Muhammad was a man and at times let his penis do his thinking for him. Tragically, what he instituted turned out to be harmful. No one would expect a real prophet of a righteous God to engage in, justify, allow, and prescribe for his followers such an cancerous act. Muhammad’s god instructed him on what to eat, what to wear, even how to wipe himself! Wouldn’t this same god instruct Muhammad about the sexual abuse of children? Muhammad proclaimed that his lifestyle was the one to be emulated, and in part, he bears the judgment for this child abuse in the Islamic world today. Girls at age 9 are not mature enough, either physically, emotionally, or mentally, to be put into those type of "marriage" situations. Shouldn't he be found guilty according to his own words and actions? Jesus said:
"You shall know them by their fruits", Matthew 7:20.
We see that one of Muhammad's fruits was allowing young girls to be subjected to a brutal custom. Jesus told his followers that false prophets would arise and mislead many to hell. Muhammad is to be rejected as such a false prophet. APPENDIX 1: DEFINITION OF THE WORD TRANSLATED AS "CONSUMMATE" There has been some confusion about the definition of the word "consummate". In Sahih Bukhari, vol. 7, #64, the root word used is "dakhala". From the Hans-Wehr Arabic-English Dictionary p273, it means "to enter, to pierce, to penetrate, to consummate the marriage, cohabit, sleep with a woman". I have also asked two native Arabic speakers to confirm the definition of the word used in Bukhari. They read Bukhari in Arabic for themselves, and did indeed state that it meant Muhammad had sexual intercourse with Aisha when she was 9. APPENDIX 2: JEWISH CULTURE AND MARRIAGE Robert Squires claims that what Muhammad did was no different than what Abraham and the Israelites allowed. His conclusion was "if it was good enough for Abraham it is good enough for me". Well, the fact is, it wasn’t good enough for Abraham and the Israelites. The Baker Ency. of the Bible says about Jewish marriage customs in volume 2, page 1407, under "Marriage":
"Subsequently, minimum ages (for marriage) of 13 for boys and 12 for girls were set."
And Jim West, ThD, writes online, in "Ancient Israelite Marriage Customs":
"The wife was to be taken from within the larger family circle (usually at the "outset of puberty" or around the age of 13) in order to maintain the purity of the family line".
Even in the Mishnah, the age of maturity for a female is 12.5 years:
"she won her case in court before she matured [at the age of twelve years and six months], lo, they belong to the father." Mishnah Ketubot, 4:1.
Jewish culture allowed young girls to be married at an early age but not as young as 9. APPENDIX 3: SCIENCE AND PUBERTY How do the biological sciences address the topic of female puberty? Here are quotes from several college level text books. There is a great deal of info presented, but it is necessary to provide scientific details to fully understand puberty. From "ADOLESCENCE - TRANSITION FROM CHILDHOOD TO MATURITY", by Lambert, Rothschild, Altland, & Green, pub. by Brooks / Cole, 1978:
page 106: "The process of physical development that results in the end of childhood and the beginning of adolescence involves three overlapping stages: Prepuberty, pubescence, and puberty. Although this sequence is the same for all individuals, the times of onset and the lengths of these periods differ from one person to another (Thornburg, 1975). Prepuberty begins at the end of childhood with a rapid rise in hormone levels... It is also a period in which a rapid growth spurt begins and the secondary sex characteristics, such as the budding of the breast in girls and the enlargement of the testes and penis in boys, start to develop. Generally, girls experience theses changes two years before boys; the average age of onset of this stage is 10 for females, 12 for males (Tanner, 1975). Pubescence, the second stage, is characterized by the proliferation of sex cells and near completion of the secondary sex characteristics (Thornburg, 1975). Pubescence begins with the menarche, or first menstruation, in girls.... The appearance of these characteristics, however, does not necessarily indicate that the reproductive system is complete. It may be a matter of months or even years before the body is capable of reproduction. It is only with the third phase, puberty, that girls develop regular ovulatory menstrual cycles and the capability for procreation....This period generally spans about two years for girls and about three years for boys, ending when all of the secondary sex characteristics have fully appeared and reproductive ability has been reached. Most boys are well into puberty by age 14 (Marshall, 1975), most girls by the age of 15-16." page 108: "... the gradual decrease in the average age at which menarche has been occurring among Western European girls and apparently among girls of the United States and Canada as well (Botstein & McArthus, 1976).... The fact that research has indicated that this trend is just as evident among girls in temperate climates as among girls in warm climates would also tend to destroy the myth that girls mature earlier in warm climates than in more moderate ones." page 111: "Abnormal growth and delayed or precocious puberty are usually associated with disorders in hypothalamic hormonal changes (Schonberg, 1075; Sizonenko, 1975)." pages 115-117: "In girls there initially appears a budding of the breasts, then the appearance of pubic hair, then the menarche, and finally ovulation. ... Breast development and pubic hair first become visible at about 10-11 years of age, whereas the menarche occurs, on the average, in the range of 11-13 years, or approximately two years after initial breast development. Menstruation during pubescence is generally irregular, partly due to factors of emotion, tension, and nutrition. Reproductive maturity is usually attained from one to two years after the first menstruation, with maximum fertility developing in the early 20s (Lamburg et al., 1973).... The average age at menarche is 12.5 to 13. However, some normal girls may begin to menstruate as early as 9, while others may not start until the age of 16 (Offer & Offer, 1968).... Genital growth is usually not complete when menstruation begins, and this growth continues slowly for several more years. The menarche is frequently followed by a period of sterility, which lasts until a regular ovulatory menstrual cycle is established. The duration of this period varies considerable; the first ovulation (the discharge of the first egg from the ovaries) may occur at menarche, or it may not take place until years later.... For several months following the menarche, there is usually a lack of regularity in the extent and timing of the menstrual flow."
WHAT ARE THE BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES TELLING US ABOUT PUBERTY? To begin with, puberty does not begin with a girl's menarche. It begins about a year or two earlier. Islam missed the mark on this. Islam considers that puberty and adulthood begin with the menarche. Further, science teaches that puberty does not end with menarche. It takes at least 2 more years for a child to sexually mature. Islam also missed the mark on this end. Science shows that usually the female body still has a ways to go from the time a girl has her menarche to the time she is sexually able to reproduce, or is considered to have an adult body. Science further documents that there are times when a child may have "precocious puberty" and have menarche as early as age 8. This is usually due to a dysfunction or disorder within the child. PUBERTY, MENARCHE, AND REPRODUCTION There is a misconception that when a young girl has her first menarche, she is capable of getting pregnant. Many primitive cultures believed that a girl can become pregnant following menarche; Muhammad's culture probably believed this as well. However, science tells us this is very rare. Instead, the average time for a girl to become pregnant following menarche is one to two years. Clearly then, girls are not "mature" following their menarche. There are no biological grounds to marry and engage post-menarcheal girls in sexual activity; they cannot conceive children yet. Puberty does not equal maturity, and therefore this misconception should not lead to marriage. Logically then, menarche is not a sign of a female being able to bear children. Only at the end of puberty can a girl conceive, not at the beginning, not at the middle. Puberty usually takes several years to complete. APPENDIX 4: ISLAM AND DAMAGE TO YOUNG GIRLS SCIENCE AND OTHER EFFECTS OF EARLY SEXUAL ACTIVITY Besides the documented assessment of growth and puberty above, other scientific and research groups have specifically addressed the effects of teen pregnancy. Here are some excerpts from webpages that address this issue. From the American Academy of Pediatrics (*)
"... Improvements in prenatal care have resulted in decreases in medical complications among babies born to teenage mothers, but mothers aged 14 years and younger continue to experience unacceptably high rates of adverse outcomes. The most significant medical risks for infants of teenage mothers are likely related to the parental care those infants receive after the first year of life. Infants born to younger teenage mothers have a higher rate of mortality by their second birthday than infants of older adolescents and adults. [3] The incidence of prenatal mortality and low birth weight increases with subsequent pregnancies in adolescents. [4] The morbidity experienced by the infants of young mothers is more subtle to define but has been reported to include increased rates of hospitalization and increased risks of accidents, poisonings, burns, and superficial injuries. [5]... ... In several studies the cognitive levels of infants of younger v older mothers have been compared, and the results indicate lower cognition among the infants of younger mothers...
FROM THE UNITED WAY - MARCH OF DIMES BIRTH DEFECTS FOUNDATION: TEENFACTS (*)
"Health Risks to the Mother" "A teenage mother is more at risk of pregnancy complications such as premature or prolonged labor, anemia and high blood pressure. These risks are even greater for teens who are less than 15 years old.(3)" "Health Risks to the Baby" "A baby born to a teenage mother is more at risk than a baby born to an older mother. "Nine percent of teenage girls have low-birthweight babies (under 5.5 lbs.), compared to 7 percent of all mothers nationally.(1)" "Low-birthweight babies may have organs that are not fully developed. This can lead to lung problems such as respiratory distress syndrome, or bleeding in the brain." "Low-birthweight babies are 40 times more likely to die in their first month of life than normal-weight babies."
However, Islam does not take into account the child's or mother's health. Consequently, this type of abuse occurs throughout the Islamic world. If anyone wants to see just how bad child abuse is in the Islamic world, read the above webpage posted by the United Nations. Most of the barbaric cultural practices listed there are generally practiced in the Islamic world. MORE PHYSICAL DAMAGE TO YOUNG GIRLS Modern medicine teaches that a female's body is not fully developed at age 9. Sexual intercourse at that age could damage a female's sexual organs. For instance, at the age of 9 years old, the cervix of the female is yet undeveloped, as are many of the child's sexual organs. Further, intercourse at this age leads to an 80% increased risk in her developing cervical cancer later in life. PSYCHOLOGICAL DAMAGE TO YOUNG GIRLS There have been several studies done on females who were married at a very young age, and then taken into sexual intercourse. Following is a citation from two of them. "Sexual contact between children and adults: A life course perspective." Browning, Christopher R; Laumann, Edward O Citation: American Sociological Review, v62n4, pp.540-560, Aug 1997 Number: 03374356 Features: Table; Illustration; References Copyright: American Sociological Association 1997
"Research interest in the long-term effects of sexual contact between female children and adults has increased dramatically in the last two decades. Two sets of issues have driven this enhanced attention. The first concerns the nature and extent of the impact these experiences have on subsequent well-being in adulthood. Empirical research has offered evidence of the severe and wide ranging effects of adult-child sex by documenting its associations with a host of later "symptoms," such as low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, and sexual dysfunction." "In each reduced model (Model 1), we see that adult-child sexual contact is significantly associated with the outcome considered. Women who experienced adult-child sexual contact were 1.6 times as likely to report sexual desire dysfunction, 2.1 times as likely to report sexual response dysfunction, 2.4 times as likely to report high dysfunction, 1.6 times as likely to report low overall well being, 1.7 times as likely to report low relationship satisfaction, and had more sexual activities that they found appealing compared with those who had no coupled sexual experiences as children. For every outcome except high dysfunction and number of sex acts found appealing, the introduction of the sexual trajectory variables (Models 2 and 3) renders the adult-child sexual contact coefficient insignificant, indicating that the effects of adult-child sex on adult outcomes are largely indirect, mediated through sexual trajectories."
Another such study was done by Peter O. Ebigbo. In the German periodical for Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychoanalysis his work was published. The abstract reads:
"Presents data on disturbed female clients whose marriages were arranged at age 9-13 years. When husbands had paid the dowry and fulfilled marriage customs, they were entitled to have sexual intercourse with their wives. Early sexual experience, mostly against the will of the underage girls, precipitated positive or negative reactions. In positive reaction cases, an imprinting fixation on the man took place. If the man died or rejected the young women, a disorientation took place, resulting mostly in an inability to have sexual relationships with other men. If the reaction was negative, the women did all she could to prevent sexual relationships with her husband through a variety of symptoms such as frequent pregnancies and secret love affairs."
APPENDIX 5: ABUSIVE PRACTICES IN THE ISLAMIC WORLD TODAY Sandra Mackey, in "Saudis, Inside the Desert Kingdom" writes on page 161:
"Girls are considered marriageable from the time they reach puberty. The lower class marries very young. The ages for marriage and first pregnancy on Tarut Island, off the east coast, were published in a rare study on women that I unearthed from a library. In the group as a whole, the mean age for marriage was fourteen, with the first pregnancy occurring at sixteen. Out of 193 girls, 3 married as young as ten. Among the Bedouins and the rural poor, a girl can be the second of two wives, married to a man older than her father, the mother of several children, and suffering from severe depression by the age of eighteen."
Jean Sasson writes in "Princess" page 74:
In Saudi Arabia, the appearance of the first menses means that it is time to select the first veil and abaaya.
page 75:
A child enters the store, but a woman emerges, veiled, and on that day, of marriageable age. Her life changes in that split second.
There are other books I could quote from, but the above is enough to illustrate the point: the legal abuse of children exists in the Islamic world today. Many of them are coerced, either by their fathers, family, or their family’s financial situation, to accept marriage with a man old enough to be their grandfather. Other girls probably don't even understand what they are getting into when they are approached to marry a man. Female children are valued greatly for their virginity, exploited by lustful old men, who purchase the girl with a dowry, and use them for sexual gratification. They are left to live as second class people in a culture based upon Muhammad's life. This is the Islam that Muslims in the West don't want to tell you about. APPENDIX 6: MUHAMMAD'S REASONS FOR MARRYING AISHA Another claim Muslims make to justify Muhammad's marriage to Aisha is that Muhammad was cementing his bond with Aisha's father, Abu Bakr. But, we read in Tabari that that was not the reason Muhammad married her. Here is the quote from Tabari, volume 9, page 129.
"The Reason Why the Messenger of God Asked for the Hands of Both Aisha and Sawdah in Marriage ... ... When Khadijah died, Khawlah, wife of Uthman, who was in Mecca, said (to the Messenger of God), "O Messenger of God, will you not marry?" He replied, "Whom"?" "A maiden [virgin]", she said, if you like, or a non-maiden." He replied, "Who is the maiden?" "The daughter of the dearest creature of God to you," she answered, "Aisha bint Abi Bakr."... She went to Abu Bakr's house, where she found Umm Ruman, mother of Aisha and said, "O Umm Ruman, what a good thing and a blessing has God brought to you!" She said, "What is that?" Khawlah replied, "The Messenger of God has sent me to ask for Aisha's hand in marriage on his behalf."
The story goes on to describe how Abu Bakr then gave his daughter in marriage when she was 6. Note here there is nothing at all about "cementing ties", between Abu Bakr and Muhammad. Instead, all we see is a match making friend hooking Muhammad up with Aisha. Anyone familiar with Abu Bakr knows that his relationship to Muhammad needed no cementing. He put his life on the line for Muhammad many times and followed him through thick and thin.
I researched the origins of the first name (M–Y) of every contestant
Following up on my post two weeks ago, here is the second half! Magdalena: From Ancient Greek, referring to a person from the ancient village of Magdala, the name of which derived from Aramaic magdala, “tower” Maggie: From Ancient Greek margarítēs, “pearl” Mamé: I got nothing! I really tried—I promise. At first I thought it was from French mamé, a less popular but still attested pet name that translates best as “grandma” or “nana,” and because Mamé was born in Switzerland (Geneva, specifically, which is a mostly francophone city) to West African parents—and because her sister, Coralie, has a French name herself—I thought that French could be relevant. It turns out, though, that things are less cut and dry. While Geneva and its environs have a French-speaking majority, Mamé’s parents are from Ghana, which has far, far less French penetration than many other West African nations have, with adolescent and adult French speakers constituting around only one percent of Ghanaians. Neighboring countries Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, and Togo all have French as at least one of their official languages, but Ghana only recognizes English as well as a bouquet of indigenous languages. I did find in this article (page 903) an individual named Mamé who came to Ghana from a village near Bamako in southern Mali, and Bamako itself has a population of which a bit less than half can speak French. So…I don’t know exactly what Mamé’s origin is, but it’s most likely either from a French or an indigenous West African source. I did not find any Arabic names that bore much similarity to Mamé, so I’ve ruled out that language for now. Maria, Mariah, Marissa: seeAnamariainprevious post Marjorie: seeMaggieabove Marvin: From Welsh Merfyn, perhaps related to mêr, “marrow” Marvita: I’m guessing that it’s a feminine diminutive of Marvin(see above). Matthew: From Hebrew Mattityahu, from matan, “gift,” and –yahu, “Yahweh” (compareAtalyainprevious post) McKey: Real name is Brittany(seeBreinprevious post) Megan, Megg: seeMaggieabove Melrose: Real name is Melissa Rose. Melissa comes from Ancient Greek mélissa, “bee,” while Rose, interestingly enough, comes via Norman French from a Germanic name, *Hrothohaidis (from *hrōthiz, “fame,” and *haiduz, “character”; for the latter element, compare Alisha in previous post), but it was heavily influenced by the word rose, via Latin and Ancient Greek likely from Old Iranian. Melrose is in fact the name of a town in Scotland, and the name derives from an ancient Celtic source akin to Scottish Gaelic maol, “bald,” and ros, “peninsula.” Mercedes: From Spanish, meaning “mercies” Michelle, Mikaela, Mike, Mikey: From Hebrew Miykha’el, “who is like god?” (compareAnnalieseinprevious post) Mila: Real name is Lyudmila, from a Slavic source akin to Russian ljúdi, “people,” and mílyj, “dear” Mirjana, MollieSue, Molly: See Anamaria in previous post. Sue derives via Latin and Ancient Greek from Hebrew shoshanná, “lily” or “rose,” perhaps from Egyptian sšn or zšn, “lotus.” Monique: Via Latin of uncertain origin—perhaps Phoenician Naduah: An Anglo-American woman named Cynthia Ann Parker was given this name when she was adopted by the Comanche people. The name is an anglicized version of Comanche na-uhru, “was found.” Naima: She mentioned that she was named for the John Coltrane song of the same name, which Coltrane named in honor of his wife, Juanita Grubbs, whose nickname was Naima. The name appears to be of Arabic origin, from na‘im, “bliss” or “delight.” Nastasia: She even said on camera what her name meant, which was helpful! Nastasia is a variant of Anastasia, from Ancient Greek anástasis, “resurrection.” Remember how, in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, all the characters said “khristos anesti” during Easter celebrations? Same root. Natalie, Natasha: From Latin diēsnātālis, “birthday” (or, in Church Latin, “Christmas Day”) Nicole: From Ancient Greek Nikólaos, from níkē, “victory,” and laós, “people” Nijah: I don’t know for certain because there is a lot of misinformation about this name online—it is in no way derived from a Spanish word for “water queen,” for starters (reina de agua?!)—but my best guess is that it is derived from Arabic najāḥ, “success” Nik: Real name is Erika, which derives from Old Norse Eiríkr, from Germanic *Aiwarīks, “eternal ruler” Nikeysha: Pretty sure this is an invented name based on Nicole(see above) and Keisha, which may be a variant of Keziah(seeKesseinprevious post) influenced by various names ending in –isha (such as Arabic Aisha, Germanic Alicia, Latin Felicia, etc.) Nina: A pet form of names ending in –nina, such as Giannina (seeGiahinprevious post), among many others Nnenna: From Igbo, “paternal grandmother,” from nne, “mother,” and nna, “father” Noelle: From French Noël, “Christmas,” from Latin nātālis (seeNatalieabove) Norelle: I’m guessing that it’s an elaborative form of Nora, a nickname for Eleanor or Honora. The former comes from Occitan Aliénor, a name borne by Eleanor of Aquitaine, who was given the same name, Aénor, as her mother and was thus referred to as alia Aénor, “the other Aénor.” I’m unsure what Aénor means, but Wikipedia (so sorry) cites a German source that connects the name to a Germanic name, Adenordis, which may be a corruption of an earlier name akin to *Audamērijaz, “famous riches,” though I would need a better source to confirm this. (Compare the names Edith, Edmund, Edwin, and Edward, all of which derive from the root *audaz, “riches.” Also compare obsolete English mere, “famous”; the names Elmer and Wilmer; and the adjective Merovingian.) Honora derives from Latin honor, which means exactly what it looks like. Nyle: Respelling of Niall, from Irish Gaelic, perhaps related to néal, “cloud,” or nia/niadh, “champion.” Interestingly, the name Nigel has the same origin. Ondrei: A phonetic spelling of Andrée, from Ancient Greek anēr, “man,” with a feminine ending Paige: Referring to a page, a young servant, from either Ancient Greek paîs, “child” (compare pediatrician) or Latin pagus, “(boy from the) countryside” (compare pagan) Phil: From Ancient Greek Phílippos, from phílos, “friend,” and híppos, “horse” Rachel: From Hebrew rakhél, “ewe” Rae: Real name is Ashley(seeprevious post) Raelia: Most likely an invented name, perhaps based on Rae (as in Rachel above) and Leah(seeprevious post) Raina: A Bulgarian name—who would have seen that coming?—that is either derived from Latin rēgīna, “queen,” or the masculine name Radko, from the common Slavic word rad, “glad” Rebecca: Via Hebrew from a Semitic root, *rbq, “tie” or “connection” Ren: Not sure about this one. Ren said that her parents named her after Kevin Bacon’s character in Footloose, but I don’t believe the movie says what Ren is short for. My guess is that it’s short for René, a French name from Latin Renatus, “born again” (compareNatalieabove). Renee: From Latin Renatus (seeRenabove) Rhianna: Probably a variant of Rhiannon, via Welsh perhaps from a Brythonic name reconstructed as *Rīgantonā, “queen” (compareRainaabove), plus an augmentative suffix Rhiyan: An elaborative respelling of Ryan, from the Irish surname Ó Riain, perhaps from rí, “king” (compareRainaabove), plus a diminutive suffix Rio: From Spanish río, “river” Robin: A diminutive of Robert, from the Germanic name *Hrōthiberhtaz, from *hrōthiz, “fame” (compareMelroseabove), and *berhtaz, “bright” Romeo: Via Italian from Greek Rōmaios, “Roman,” from Latin Rōma, “Rome,” a name of uncertain origin Saleisha: My best guess is that it’s an invented name based on Sally (seeSarabelow) with the popular suffix –isha (compareNikeyshaabove), but I did find that salisha is an imperative verb meaning “cause to pray” in Swahili, so…perhaps that’s something. Samantha: Most likely either from Samuel (with an elaborative suffix) or from the same Semitic root as Samuel: *šm‘, “to hear” Sandra: seeAlexandrainprevious post Sara, Sarah: From Biblical Hebrew śaráh, “lady” or “princess,” which means “female (government) minister” in modern Hebrew, from the Semitic root *śrr, “to rule” Seymone: Elaborative respelling of Simone, from Hebrew Šim‘on, from the verb šama‘/lišmo‘a, “to hear” (compareSamanthaabove) Shandi: Shandar is an Urdu name that means “fabulous,” and Sháńdíín means “sunshine” in Navajo, but that’s not terribly relevant here. Various websites (that do not cite legitimate sources, if any) connect the name to Shannon, Shoshana, or Welsh Shan (seeShannonbelow, the etymology of Sue underMirjanaabove, andGiahinprevious post), but this is neither here nor there. The name seems to come from the Kiss song “Shandi,” which was featured on the album Unmasked, and the song was inspired by the Bruce Springsteen song “4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy),” from the album The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle. I thought for a hot second that Shandi was just an inventive version of Sandy, but then I found this book, which implies that the song was named after a singer named Shandi Sinnamon (not Cinnamon, as the book says), who was born Shandra. It’s not clear what Shandra means, but it may indeed be an inventive version of Sandy(seeAlexandrainprevious post). Whew! Shanice: An invented name based on the elements Shan– and –ice that was popularized by the singer of the same name Shannon: From the name of the river, from Irish Gaelic Sionna, perhaps related to sean, “old” or “ancestor,” a word with some derivatives in Irish that contain “wise” among their definitions (such as seanchríonna) Sharaun: Real name is Brittney; see Bre in previous post Sheena: seeGiahinprevious post Shei: Real name is Andrea; see Ondrei above Simone: seeSeymoneabove Sophie: From Ancient Greek sophíā, "wisdom" Stacy-Ann: seeAnaleigh(for Ann) inprevious postandNastasia(for Stacy) above Stefano: From Ancient Greek stéphanos, “crown” or “wreath” Sundai: From Old English sunnandæġ, “day of the sun,” a translation of Latin diēs sōlis and Ancient Greek hēmérā hēlíou Tahlia: Likely a phonetic respelling of Talia, from Hebrew tal, “dew,” and –yah, “Yahweh” (compareAtalyainprevious post) Tash: Likely a pet form for Natasha (seeNatalieabove) Tatiana, Tatianna: From Latin Tatius, a Roman name apparently of Sabine origin Terra: Variant of Tara (influenced by Latin terra, “land”), from Irish Gaelic teamhair, “hill,” though other authors associate Teamhair with Latin templum and Ancient Greek temenos, suggesting an Indo-European origin Tessa: A nickname for Theresa, perhaps from Ancient Greek Thērasía, an island in the Aegean Sea that was once attached to Thera (aka Santorini), or perhaps from théros, meaning “harvest,” “heat,” or “summer” Teyona: I’m guessing that it’s a phonetic respelling of Tiana, which can be short for Christiana (seeChrisinprevious post) or Tatiana(see above) Tiffany: A variant of Theophania (yes, really), from Ancient Greek theós, “god,” and the suffix –phanēs, “appearing” Toccara: Most likely from the Avon perfume Toccara, the name of which is apparently derived from Italian toccare, “to touch” (compare French toucher and Spanish tocar) Victoria: From Latin, meaning “victory” Xiomara: Possibly a variant of Guiomar, which itself is possibly derived from a Germanic name akin to *Wīgamērijaz, from *wīga, “battle” (compareLouiseinprevious post), and *mērijaz, “famous” (compareNorelleabove) Wendy: J. M. Barrie seems to have invented this name for the book Peter Pan, basing it on fwendy, a childish way of saying “friend,” but the name occasionally predates the book, and in these cases, it may derive from the Welsh word gwen, “white” (compareJenniferinprevious post) Whitney: From Old English hwītan īeġe, “(by the) white island” Will: From the Germanic name *Wiljahelmaz, from *wiljô, “will,” and *helmaz, “helmet” Yaya: Real name is Camara, which has been a little tough to research. There is a Portuguese surname Câmara, derived from Latin camera, “chamber” or “room,” from Ancient Greek ultimately, but I can’t tell if Yaya’s parents—her mother has Brazilian heritage, by the way—pulled a Beyoncé (whose mother’s surname was Beyincé) and gave their daughter a variation of a family surname as her first name (it’s worth noting that her father’s surname is Johnson, and her mother’s surname is DaCosta, so…maybe scratch that theory). A few websites—without citing sources—claim that Camara means “teacher” in Igbo, but it very much does not; the Igbo word for “(male?) teacher” is onye nkuzi. However, Camara is an attested surname throughout French-speaking West Africa—where the Portuguese had some historical presence—so there may be a partial African origin here. I should also note that Islam is popular in West Africa, and Qamar is an Arabic name (meaning “moon”) that bears a passing similarity to Camara. That’s all I have for now. Yoanna: seeGiahinprevious post Yvonne: A French-ass name, indeed. It is derived from the masculine name Yves, potentially from the Germanic root *īhwaz, “yew” Let me know if I've missed anything!
According to a user from Egypt, the name Aisha means "Aisha was Muhammad's favorite wife, and it means 'Alive' or 'life'". According to a user from Illinois, U.S., the name Aisha is of Arabic origin and means "Life or Alive". According to a user from the United Kingdom, the name Aisha means "She who live". Meaning of Aisha. Aisha is an indirect Quranic name for girls that means “alive”, “well-living”, “happily living”.
